I used one about 25 years ago for a 800 mhz portable radio I had to carry around and really liked the set up. In fact I still have the goose neck, that thing is indestructable. Thanks for the link.

If you're going to use it to hold a phone you can run a wireless charger to it. I took mine apart, ran the wire from the charging pad down the goose neck inside the tubing. I used 3m tape to stick the pad to the phone cradle and now I can charge wirelessly with a mostly hidden wire. I ran the wire from the charging pad to my center console where I wired a dual USB charger.

    look into Pitaka magnetic mounts.

If you have an iPhone with MagSafe it will stick right on to the charger mount via the magnets built into your iPhone (even stronger if you have a "MagSafe" compatible case). If you also use Pitaka's magnet case, then it's even stronger than just using your phone or a typical MagSafe compatible case. The charger can also charge your phone wirelessly so you don't have to plug in your phone with cable.

They also have cases for Samsung phones that make your phone compatible with their magnetic mounts.

I've used the traditional type of mount and they are so annoying to fiddle with. Pitaka is the way to go! When I get in the car, there's no fiddling with those plastic mounts. Just get it close and the mount/charging pad sucks it right up. I've also never had an issue with the magnets failing. They are really strong.

Another one worth looking into is the Anger MagSafe (or maybe they call it "MagGo") car mount. I haven't tried it myself but I've been meaning to because it mounts on the dash rather than windshield or air vent.

The ram mount x-grip is absolute garbage. Toddler hands would be more reliable. My large phone in an otter box falls out at the slightest vibration

OffRoam hands down. Best phone holder I’ve had. Sturdy all metal design. Quality is excellent.
