That would make you 99% of all these tools on social, you tube etc. the absolute worst are the guys in Colorado like Last Line of Defense and Talon Sei. He has literally changed his RTT configuration 6 times in the last year, and literally installed a Kimbo specifically for Overland west expo and dumped it soon after. How anyone can take these clowns serious is beyond me.

Nobody is criticizing anyone in any serious manner. It’s just a fun discussion about people, I suppose of a similar mind to yourself, who engage in social media tomfoolery.

The main take-away, is Instagram is just BS and illusion, as we all know. When these “overland experts” recommend stuff, it is only because they got the stuff free, or hope to get it free in the future. In some ways that is douchy behaviour, as it may deceive the gullible. Nobody is actually doing any serious product testing. When some IG dweeb says “I trust Toyos to deliver the traction I need”, it just a nonsense statement that parrots some advertisement or whatnot.

Based on the pristine nature, and overall unnecessary bloat of a many Tacoma “rigs” on IG, I would wager most people have little or no actual basis for their opinion, and are just slaves to fashion. They bolt on the latest crap, mount the latest tires, then yammer on about it, hoping you’ll use their discount code.

Photos please, preferably in some very tight leopard print pants. Asking for a friend.

Well, as someone who has a YT channel and an IG account for installs and off-roading I have to agree with the majority of what you all are saying. However, there are folks out there doing what they enjoy and documenting it for the masses honestly, without being sponsored or getting free shit. I turn down free shit all the time. From led lights and generators to indoor fountains and kitchen appliances. I have had several companies send me shirts and hats, but that was after I filmed an install on their product. I have never reached out to companies and asked for free shit in exchange for exposure. For me it's super simple, If I don't want to pay for it, I don't want it for free.

I laugh a little every time I see an install and the youtuber is where the merchandise from the company she/he is doing the install for. It's all BS, but people love it.

Also, don't forget to like and subscribe. :D

Why do Toyota trucks, and the Tacoma in particular receive the amount of social media exposure that they do?

Midisze trucks are popular, and have their place in the market. They can be a compromise when it comes to payload, towing, fuel economy, and price when compared to a fullsize. Midsize is more nimble, easier to park, smaller foot print off road.

Tacoma owners mostly agree that the Tacoma is a compromise in it's segment. When you run the nubers against the competition.

I like Tacomas, and Toyota trucks in stock form, mild to wild 4x4 builds, lowered street truck builds, Prerunner desert racing builds etc. You could easily build a more capable off road Jeep build. There are or, was at one time a few alternative platforms available for those other style of builds.

    Styling?

Reliability? That's a good starting point for modifications, but more mods often lead to less reliability.

Pricing? Toyotas are usually at the upper end of the competition.

Resale value? That comes at a higher entry fee, and mods usually decrease value.

Popularity? Being popular is the only qualification needed to achieve popularity.

Occultism? Does the Tacoma have that much personality?

I think pricing these days is actually pretty competitive. Tacoma is cheaper than Ranger or Gladiator. Maybe Nissan is less.

Styling plays a big role. Tacoma looks pretty good stock and awesome done-up right. The ranger looks terrible stock and modded. The gladiator needs 37’s to not look goofy. Nissan looks like a less refined Tacoma.

Also, Toyota delivers on their reputation. These trucks are tough, capable, and reliable, even if the driving experience isn’t everyone’s favourite.

You’re definitely not in that camp, from the few install videos I’ve seen. Now, if you started changing out your RTT every month and showing up to expos with a one time use Kimbo camper, then things would get froggy

Those are all things that people like about Toyotas and what makes them popular.

Does that translate into what works for Toyota's presence on social media? I guess what works in the real world, works on sm too. I don't think Toyota is sponsoring the majority of people who promote Toyota on line.

There may be a few corporate accounts out there owned by Toyota, and you have aftermarket manufacturers who cater to Toyota products. Mostly promoting their wares, and Toyota in the process that's a win-win for them.

Seems most people are voluntarily promoting Toyota on sm. Toyota has a popular product, and huge brand recognition. Some people might be promoting their own account with the help off Toyota's popularity.

I like the way a properly built Ram 1/2-1ton looks or something like a Bronco or Wrangler. Sometimes one of those vehicles might look cooler than a similarly built Tacoma.

I think Toyota as a brand, especially their trucks, and 4x4 vehicles. Represet and embrace a sense of rebellion in one's mind. Maybe in the face of American Imperialism and Corporatism. Even when one isn't completely against those ideals. Toyotas gained much of their notoriety during the oil embargoes and crises of the 60s 70's & 80's.

People started to sway from the American domestic brands Ford, GM, Chrysler, AMC. Was that in protest of imperialism, and dependence on foreign oil coupled by events, otherwise patriotic citizens did not support?

America has always been a vision of freedom, and founded on rebellion. The automobile, and motorcycle have been iconic symbols of American freedom, and rebellion. Even American made pick up trucks. Until import compact trucks made the scene.

I'm just here to say how utterly offended I am of your spelling of "colour." What are you, communist?

Hilarious thread, and reminds me that I totally need some rotopax and a portable fridge.

It's very obvious who is doing things with and without an agenda.

Today we're gonna be testing 5 products from the same manufacturer (that I conveniently sell). Oh, would you look at that, the most expensive one is the best!

If you have company names in your title roll, I'm probably not interested.

And they all get the same stuff around the same time

Most of the YouTube stuff is pretty useless because I don't need a review of the most current model every 2 months. I know content is key but if you have to change everything on your vehicle evey few months, maybe none of it is that good. If I watch a video and you've still got something from a video you shot a year or 2 ago, that's probably the best endorsement.

I often wonder what boat I missed out on, because I can't stand YouTube. It's wading through a mountain of bullshit to find 15 seconds of reference that I need.

... No I don't want to watch you unboxing while commenting that your new shocks are shiny. Of course new shocks are shiny, you walnut. I just want to know how to drop the LCA and be on my merry way.

I seriously miss the days of a written procedure.
