Orange Can of Death- oil filter

I too have searched around on BITOG for the

XG3600 with good results. Planning to see how my oil looks after 5K with the D3, then I may try the Fram filter and assess from there. Blackstone gave me positive feedback from using the D3’s so I’m curious what they’d say about the Fram.

 

So the Fram 'Orange can of death' is going to kill my taco? I'm glad it doesn't know that. The video seemed to have a lot of 'this could be a problem' and nothing saying 'this is why it kills engines'. I have been using Fram all my life. Tried Supertech but saw one destroy a jeep 4.0 inline six in my dad's Cherokee, so I steer clear of those now.

 

This is the truth and replicates my experiences with Fram Filters also. I used them for decades and have never seen or had any issues. As long as you change the oil on a regular basis as required you will not have an issue.

 

I agree. I think of oil filters like fuel octane.
If one does the job, do you “need” one that is better.
I used nothing but Fram on my 1st Gen. Never an issue.

I let someone else change my oil now.
And I asked him what filter they used, he said he didn’t know for sure but it was either Fram or STP that made it.

And for those that want to know why I don’t change my oil.
I can still get it done for less than $35. And that’s a fair price for me to pay.
I don’t know what oil or filter. But I’d venture to guess, it isn’t “up to TacomaWorld standards”.
But it works well for me.

 

Yeah the 5VZ likes the SuperTech, I just run the plain 5W30 synthetic, no leaks or oil burning with 160k on the engine. Over 10 years I've tried pretty much every option and at the end of the day it's a relatively simple motor that just wants regular maintenance with the right weight oil lol

 

So I switched over to the ST full syn high mileage 5W-30. I’ve never ran high mileage stuff before but so far it’s doing excellent. It’s about 95 where I am today and feels like 103, and after an hour of long driving, A/C blasting, the truck still idles much quieter than before. So I’m extremely impressed to say the least. I feel kinda silly that it took me all these years to figure out that simplest is best for my rig, but as they say, better late than never.

I once used to pay to get the oil changed. It’s convenient and quick. Then this happened. Dude brings me a plastic coated paper with a sample of every fluid to try to sell me on replacing them. I said I didn’t authorize him to touch anything other than what’s required to do the oil change. Next I saw it on sale for $20 for the oil change. I specifically state can you do it without touching the other fluids? Yes. Here he comes again with that plastic coated paper. I thought you said you could…? He says I said I could but didn’t say I would. So to keep myself out of a situation where I’d get arrested for assault, I don’t go to those places, I do it myself.

 

The place I go to, I told the guy years ago. I’m only here to get the oil changed. And that if he or his guys wanted to inspect the truck, fine with me. But they’d be wasting their time. As I was only there for an oil change. The service manager actual thanked me for letting them know I wasn’t interested.

I have bought a few things from them. Like lifetime alignment and tires.
But that’s because it’s convenient for me. They can do it all in one visit.
Last set of tires went over 70k. I’m a FIRM believer in rotating tires. Mine get rotate ever 5k miles.

 

Isn't the supertech oil filter made by fram? They use the same part number.

In all my vehicles, I've always tried to use a mid-priced oil filter or one-on-sale, even bought a couple of filers at so-called clearance prices. Knock on wood, so far I've never had an issue. Oil has always been full-synthetic changed at owners manual recommended intervals. Never known of anyone who ever had an issue with an oil filter. I did have one issue many years ago where the rubber gasket stuck to the engine and I ended up double gasketing it. When it didn't build up oil pressure and saw oil on the floor I knew something wasn't right so I check to see if the gasket came off with the filter.

 

Not that it means shit, but I've been doin' this self service/maintenance/repair thing since '70 or so (still do, mostly). Only seen exactly two (2) oil filter failures in that stretch. One on an early '80s Firebird Formula 5L (Pontiac's infamous 301), the other on a Ranger 3.0. I leaped off the Orange bandwagon after the first one....
I'm sure their new Ultra line is good stuff, asper several poster's opins here I would value as my own. The old car covered up in my garage is orange though, but not the oil filter.....

I touch many oil filters. Many are over tightened. The orange ones, you need to grip the very upper edge with the filter wrench or it easily crushes like a soda can. They’re so thin you can feel it give when you squeeze it by hand.

 

LOL... instead of OCOD maybe we should call them Orange Crush filters?

 

There is supposed to be a rubber seal. It’s missing. So if someone installed that oil filter, started the truck, oil will squirt out.
