How Gritto Got His Grudge Against Doctors

This one's a goodie

When I was little on the farm, I always went barefoot.
One day, while in the lower pasture crossing the stream, I cut my foot.
Within an hour, I was laid out with a temperature of 104 (my Mom told me later).

Well, my Dad was away for Air Force Reservist duty and had the family car.
It so happened that the only other vehicle in running order that day was the big stake bed truck.
My Mom bundled me into the cab with my older sister and away we went.
The nearest hospital was almost an hour away.

I don't remember much, but I remember someone screaming.
My sister later said it was me, but I'm not so sure.
The doctor was cutting away tissue from the cut on my foot and my sister was yelling at him about anesthesia...
... specifically the lack thereof.
Blood poisoning... probably because of cow manure (?)
Farms are dirty places.

I was maybe six years old.
Still have the scar.
