Hi, I'm a new member with a n '01 Tacoma Prerunner and i have questions about catalytic converters. I was reading the thread and someone mentioned carparts.com. I found a good price there on a set of both converters (SET-REPT 960-308-2) but I am wondering if anyone has an opinion the quality of the Evan Fischer brand. I don't buy something because it is the lowest price because that is usually a bad plan. Any opinions are appreciated.
    Thank you, Mike

How do you know the cats are bad? Sometimes if you're getting a CEL code, it could be bad censors, too.

rockauto might be another place to look for parts.

Magnaflow is widely considered to have the best quality aftermarket catalytic converters. Particularly if you need them to be 50 state legal

Be sure to look at the sticker under the hood to determine if your truck is a California model. Those use California specific cats.

My Taco says something like "meets Federal EPA standards and California standards". I assume this means CARB compliant.

I found at least one source that suggested all V6 Tacos from 2001 were "CA compliant" - can anyone confirm?

Magnaflow website suggests it only matters where I'm registered. So if I'm not in one of the 4 CARB states (CA, CO, NY, ME I think?) Is it OK to run 46-state legal setup? That is, will my ECM function correctly without CEL?

(I don't really want to be more-polluting than stock, but the price difference is eye opening.)

All Tacomas after 2000 or so are CA/50 state legal emissions-wise. Magnaflow is correct, it only matters where you are registered. In CA if you don't get CARB approved cats then you'll fail the smog check. Although they're unlikely to notice if you don't have to get a sniff test done.

The difference between the CARB legal cats and 48 state legal ones is how much material is in them. The material they're made out of that filters emissions is crazy expensive so the 50 state ones will cost a lot more

Your truck won't know which you put on. But the cheaper ones with less material will likely fail again sooner and throw a code (p0420)
