I have a stock weight truck, with OEM suspension and run 265/70/17s. I’ve been looking into getting King adjustable coilovers and was hoping to lift my truck 3”. I read here that Kings are not best for 3” lifts as it’s too much preload in the springs and cause them to be really stiff. I really want a plush ride while on pavement as this is my daily driver but want a suspension system that can manage medium difficulty trails. Would preloading the spring to achieve a 2 inch lift and adding a inch spacer be a stupid thing to do? My thought is that this would not over preload the spring (and not sacrifice the plush ride I want) yet help me achieve 3 inch of lift and run 285/70/17s. Would running a spacer on this nice coilover compromise their functionality? I’m open to any other recommendations. Also looking at fox 2.5 DSC’s too.

Coil overs and spacers don't mix. Stay under 3 Inches of lift if you want a plush ride and don't want to grenade cv axles.

Can I fit 285/70/17 with 2.5 inch lift? Are you saying all coil overs shouldn’t go over 3 inches to maintain a plush ride or is that just Kings?

Where are you reading this at? Adding too much preload to any coilover will result in ride quality issues, nothing to do with the brand.

If you are concerned about ride quality, then I would suggest not focusing on lift height numbers. With our recommended shock lengths at ride height, we typically get about 2-2.5" of lift on a 3rd gen Tacoma. DO NOT add spacers to an aftermarket coilover. This will push the extended length of the coilover far beyond what the CVs, steering and possibly UCA can handle and you risk a lot of damage.

I'm still not sure on the preload concern, but in general when you buy coilovers you should be sure you are getting the correct spring rate for your trucks weight. Once that is accomplished, you should not have any preload issues (unless you or a shop over do it) https://accutuneoffroad.com/preload-adjustments-on-oem-fit-coilovers/

If you have specific questions, shoot us over a message. Happy to help get you pointed in the right direction.
