    Nepatism is a huge part of the business. Lots of Fathers, sons, uncles, cousins, etc…

    When productions get super busy (which happens a few times per year) then someone without any connections can get on the “industry roster” and when productions desperately need people they’ll call the union hall and ask for people to be sent out. That’s how you get your “days” in. You are considered a “permit” when you first start working.

    I’m in the “Grip” department and we have to have 30 permit working days to be able to join the union. I was fortunate that I was able to join my dad on a production 10 years ago and get in that way. Have made a lot of connections along the way and worked hard so I’m fortunate to stay very busy and never be looking for work.

    We definitely have some tough days but have a good amount of perks as well. I often tell people that my job is kinda of like big people Legos or Erector sets. I enjoy it

    I'm fascinated by the union dynamics of the industry. I have a buddy who just earned his SAG card - can't qualify for one of those unless you already had a speaking role, and considering production has to move mountains to get a non-union actor on set, that's a hell of an achievement.

    I mean, I understand why they run the impossible model of "can't get in unless you're already in, " but it's fascinating to hear about that stuff.
