2012 2.7L 53,000 miles. I filled up today and my gas mileage was 14MPG. I do not drive on the interstate much just main roads and such. I have changed spark plugs for just regular maintenance and I have ran fuel injector cleaner as well just as cheap preventative maintenance. Is 14MPG normal on these trucks for non interstate driving. If not what could I check? Thanks.

14 is not normal. I just averaged 21.09 on my tank when I filled up today and I have a v6.

Are you running stock tires and gearing?

@Dm93 truck is 100% stock. It’s a 4x4 but it’s stock. No lift no big tires etc.

    This is important ^

I’d start with cleaning the MAF and making sure your tire psi is correct and changing out your af if you haven’t in a while. Adding all the “cool” shit to your truck like armor, racks, rims, oversized tires start chewing up mpg in a hurry.

edit. Just read your reply. Disregard the tire and mods aspect.

Yea it should do better than that, I'd monitor it over several tankfulls though to be sure it's actually that bad before getting too exited about it.
Alot of things can factor into poor fuel economy but with only 53k miles evrything should be in good shape yet, wouldn't hurt to check your air filter and clean your MAF and throttle body though.

I’ll clean the MAF What’s the safest way to clean inside the throttle body as I know you do not want to force the throttle plate open. Is it as simple as someone holding gas pedal down (not started) and cleaning that way?

You can do it that way but it's not the safest, I've never had an issue pushing the throttle blade open to clean them you just don't want to force it or move it beyond it's normal range.

@Dm93 thanks. I’ve always been told if you force them open it can damage them some how. But you know how the internet is lol.

I will say some people have damaged them by doing that but who knows what they did, I've never had a problem though. The WOT method is for brave people LOL, I like my fingers and that throttle motor can put a serious hurt on them if it decides to close while I'm cleaning in there.

14 mpg is not good. The above suggestions are right on...Guess you need to look at everything...I took a recent 2,000 mile trip with my 2.2, to wheel drive...I got 29 mpg pm the highway...In town not so good...Also, I go easy on the throttle...

@tacobp i cleaned the MAF sensor this morning. Air filter looked good. Also cleaned the throttle body (had to clear some check engine lights after) but none returned since the cleaning.
