I’m lifting my 04 Tacoma and am upgrading to 285/75/R16s. Because the spare won’t fit in the stock well I want to add a swing out tire carrier. Looking for any and all advice or input.

I need to start researching this also. I'd prefer to buy, but not afraid of building one.

    Build or buy?

For my Tacoma, I had purchased the discontinued hard to find Wilco Tiregate -

    20200212_090948.jpg

On the otherhand, @GHOST SHIP fabricates a pretty badass tire gate that works similarly, except he can add shit like a fold-out table in case you're not able to fabricate your own. This one belongs to @eon_blue (red), next to my old Tacoma (white) -

You can have these built onto a rear bumper as well, or just order one from the handful of companies that still make them.

For my current vehicle, I'm building my own swingout rear bumper.

swing out bumpers are cool but spendy if your'e going to buy one already made. The swing out tail gates like pictured above are a nice compromise, but you do lose the tailgate. I love mine but not having the tailgate is sometimes inconvenient when camping or if I have to put something in the bed that's longer than the length of it.

I used to rock a high clearance CBI swing out (it was a beast). I did find two annoyances: The Tacoma frames flex pretty horribly with all of the added weight back there, so frame reinforcement plates were necessary. The other thing is that I couldn't carry anything long back there. This time, I am tempted to find a used wilco hitch mounted one.

I'm on my 2nd version, and working on designing my 3rd version. There are a lot nicer parts available now than there were 15 years ago. 4xinnovations makes some good DIY parts if you go that route.

I heard nothing but good things about their parts; I literally just ordered their spindle kit last night in preparation for my bumper.

I've kind of made some changes (in my own head) about my design.

I want to break up the "flat rear faced" look by making the hitch sit inward a bit versus flush or sticking out.

We'll see how it turns out :burp:

I’ve built a couple swingouts for people using their kits and they’re right on the money. Highly recommend.

I just wasn't sure what type of latch I wish to go with. Had considered texting you yesterday but I didn't because I can't answer this question yet -

Do I want to add a second swing out, or go full length on the first one?

Thanks for all the feedback. Can’t wait to research the different options.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
That is going to make it hard for you to enter and exit the Land Cruiser!!

Have you designed a work around for that problem yet.

I have a bad back, so it's already hard to get back there when I need to

Fortunately the Land Cruiser has a tailgate like a truck so if I do need to reach back there, I hop up to sit on the tailgate.

The 4XInnovations spindle latch has a "catch" so it'll stay open when I need to access anything in the trunk.

Op if you can I'd consider a duel swing out. Having everything on one side definitely makes it so you have to compromise on how you setup at camp ect beacouse you have a long pole to walk around. .. it's not really a big deal but definitely something to consider.
