Am I sending too hard?

If you're slamming a lot I'd say you need full armor and bump stops.

As many are saying, a lift gets the chassis further away, but the true low point is determined by the tire size.

First of all let me start of by saying spacer lifts are not going to get you better functionality obviously. How ever even a shitty spacer lift in front and blocksbin the rear will raise your frame higher and net you better ground clearance for the frame which is what the op is complaining about. One could even argue that a stupid big as body will give you and advantage to help clear the body away from obstacles. Im not saying go and get a 3in spacer lift and and a 6in body lift and go to Moab with stock tires and see if thats better.

 

The issue is about dynamic clearance not static. To those saying but the rear diff will hit. Go stand on your hood and jump up and down. Does your front clearance reduce? Yes it does. Now go jump up and down in the bed. Does your rear diff clearance reduce? No it doesn’t.. that is the issue most of us have with the factory clearance. We are hitting the front skid not the rear diff.

 

I think the cover over the gas tank is plastic and the OR engine skid is thick tin foil

 

That thud is probably just you bottoming out and slamming the hard ass hockey puck bump stops.

Get some DuroBumps and keep hucking it.

I think the relative strength of the underbody components should be relatively obvious to anyone with some mechanical sense. Crawl under your truck and spend some time under there looking up. The strong parts and weak parts should become obvious. A little lift can help if you are moving slowly. If you are hitting stuff at speed, you’ll blow through your lift and smack anyways.

Keep in mind the magic of the Tacoma is it does a lot of things reasonably well, but is not is not the “best” at anything. These trucks are not purpose built off-road beasts. They are passenger vehicles, first and foremost, that do surprisingly well off road for what they are. I think that is the fun of a Tacoma: “this truck has no business going up this trail, but it is”.

If you keep that in mind, you’ll be fine. If you think your truck is a Jeep, you are gonna likely break it at some point.

 

I know that obstacle on Kingston Peak. I've taken a Jeep WK and my old SR5 (both stock) over it a few times and got high centered on my frame. Ended up having to stack rocks to get over it.

I'm getting 33s put on my OR this week and will hit that trail again soon!
