I told ya I'd drive home a PRO over this! 2 cylinders failed leak down test. Only 16K miles.

I always refuse. They talk for at least a half hour pushing it. Nope!

 

At this time the root cause of the cylinder failing the leak down test is unknown.
A cracked block has not been determined. It could be the block, gasket or a head issue.
If the cylinder is truly loosing compression.
Right now my guess given the facts I currently have.

• Intermittent misfire.
• No overheating
• No loss of coolant
• No loss of power
• No unusual engine noise

Would be a weak not broken valve spring on that cylinder. Thus not allowing the valve to properly seat at times.
Which will not allow the valve to transfer heat to the cylinder head. And is or will result in a burnt valve.

But this is just a hypothetical guess given the current information available.

Rent a ozone generator. Run inside truck with ac on recirc for 2 hours.
Problem will be gone.

 

Another words, could even be some bad gas. I've heard these v6 3.5's in the water companies fleet here idling rough at times until they drive away. I'm getting to think its just normal operation. They run these trucks all day long doing service calls.

Yes, it could be bad gas causing the misfire. But bad gas won't cause a cylinder to loose compression.
I hope another/other tests are done and this is proven not to be true about the compression.
And it does turn out to be water, a sparkplug or an injector. But I think they would have checked those 1st before doing a compression test.
I should have more information today or tomorrow.

 

Well, if losing compression is something else. Have they done a leakdown test on that cylinder?

 

Yes, they did a leak down test. #6 cylinder failed.

 

Other than for the failed compression test, this sounds like an intermittent ignitor coil. That should show as trouble code I would think. It's a weird problem, that's sure.

 

Failed leak down test; not compression test. Dealer probably already has a pretty good idea of the issue from the leak down test. My guess is exhaust valves.

 

Update. Stopped by the Dealer on the way home.
They're 90% sure valve(s) issue. Said they've seen it on 3-4 other Tacomas. Mostly passenger side cylinder bank. Just the valve(s) fail to seat properly. Nothing ever actually broken. Won't be 100% sure till they pop the head. Good thing I guess is. The guy doing it is a Toyota Master Tech with 20+ years with Toyota. We'll hope for the best.

 

There have been a few threads with #1 valve issues. My guess is you'll have the same, just a different cylinder.

You'll get all fixed up and in a few weeks it will be a distant memory.

But you should still secure an extended Toyota warranty on their dime. Just to make you feel better if nothing else.

 

Said if it is a valve issue. And if parts are available. I should get the truck back next week.
I asked about the extended warranty. They said that would probably have to come from Toyota.
Anyone have any experience getting an extended warranty from Toyota on their dime?

 

Dont even need parts for that, just valve lapping compound, a suction cup, and some elbow grease.

 

Think I need to fuss on em a little. Make sure they keep my finders covered.

Toyota Master Tech 20 years with Toyota yet he can’t use fender covers when working on your truck? Sad.

 

Supply chain - those fender covers are stuck in a shipping container off the coast.

 

The only reason I commented was I worked as a Porsche tech at a dealer for 12 years and 95% of the techs never used fender covers, which were provided clean every week from our uniform company. I don’t care how much experience the tech has, if he doesn’t use fender covers he should be wrenching with Uncle JimBob down in the holler.
