Open your tailgate, take the black plastic off (the tailgate is pretty much hollow other than a few support pieces) put a block of wood in there on the dent and gently or not so gently hammer it out a bit, then hit it with some touch up paint if so desired. Wont look perfect but better.

Try this. I had a brand new Audi that got hit by a falling branch and they took the entire dent out. Seal the paint and enjoy the truck.

It's annoying but not that bad damage wise.
Check out local dent removal before spending too much $$$$.

I'd try this before taking it to shop for repair. If you can get the dents mostly out, they can cover the small imperfections with body filler and repaint.

Was a pull-it-parts place suggested to you? I'd probably live with it too.

Someone ran into our new Subaru and left a dent in the driver's side rear quarter panel. I'm sure a dents place could easily pull that out. One thing it does however, it distinguishes, no PERSONALIZES our ride, and makes for sorting our Subaru from all the others in Silver in the parking lot much easier.

So there's that. And then there's the chance that after searching, finding, painting, the new to you tailgate gets damaged...

And finally, there is the karma that comes with, well, it's already dinged, no sense worrying about it. It's now "broken" in.

I did the same thing to my truck with a forklift. I spray painted it with the matching color (white) n called it a day.

    **Update!**

My girlfriend, who is already out of my league and continually proves it, called while I was at work and asked if she could help by trying to keep the rain off my new tailgate mods. I told her I didn't mind and there really wasn't much she could do that would hurt it. Here are the Before and afters she took:

She even took a picture of her supplies:

Like her and the Tacoma...it's better than I deserve! :)

Smart move on her part. The right idea. The execution is probably not ideal but better than leaving the metal exposed. At least it's not rusting at the moment. Buy her a beer or whatever she likes to drink.
