The government actually contributed 50 billion to bail out GM when they filed for bankruptcy. Between the loan that was paid back and what the government made selling the GM stock, on paper, lost 11 billion.

However, they saved 1.2 million jobs and almost 40 billion in annual tax revenue. So in the end, it was and is a win. I’ll take a 1 time 11 billion loss for a yearly 40 billion payout.

Don’t understand why we need a nationalized car industry. Especially when GM phones it in and cries to Uncle Sam when they fail.

you mean like all the financial institutions did during the 2009 housing collapse? Every atm transaction, every loan you take, every cent of interest on your credit card, all goes to the same financial institutions that almost completely collapsed the global economy. Jesus Christ, read a book dude…

Unfortunately the 3.5L turbo in the 2022 Tundra has many turbo wastegate failures requiring cab-off repairs.

Ford has probably the most extensive recent experience with turbos in truck engines, yet they still get things wrong with e.g. the Bronco engine.

Turbos do make me shy away, though would tow better since it moves peak torque lower in the RPM range. Don’t tow super heavy anymore, the Tacoma’s mini-van engine feels more than enough for what need it to do.

Toyotas aren’t infallible either, owned them long enough to see that. My ‘85 4Runner needed a new engine at 125K, bought that one used with 60K…clutch went out on me on the way home from the dealer. ‘92 wasn’t too bad…balljoints, clutch, and CVs. ‘99…those 3.4s need a timing belt every 90K. That truck was good to 250K, then just about everything around the engine started failing. Basically rebuilt the whole drivetrain.

Who knows if this 3G will be long term reliable, won’t know until I get it there. Had it 10 months and have 15’000 miles on it already so I rack up the miles quick. So in 10 years should be around 180K on it. Imagine EVs should be sorted by then, be a good time to get rid of it.

Toyota moves quickly to fix issues though. When the new Tacoma came out in 2016 it was plagued with early problems and it ended up dead last on CR list of trucks to recommend due to reliability issues. Toyota addressed those pretty quickly.

In some cases. Plenty of people got screwed on that still. My 97 was immaculate and was out of warranty when it finally fell apart but I do not blame them for that. Still got my moneys worth out of the truck. My bigger issue is that they still use the same method and frames. I mean, fix the problem. Everyone buying a Tacoma today is getting the same thing as we were in the 2nd gen. They will do the same thing.

Keep hearing about how quickly Toyota resolves issues. What are they doing about the need to remove cab to facilitate swapping a turbo? That’s some messed up deal. Really no reason to expect you wouldn’t have to replace a turbo during the life of a vehicle, even the best will fail before anything else. Or with gm, it’s a toss up with transmission.
