I know it doesn't make a lot of sense getting rock sliders that don't mount to the frame but I wanted these for these reasons:

    - As a step to reach into the cab side of my bed
    - Low profile without losing any clearance
    - Protection against door dings and light offroading
    - Lighter weight
    - Cost less

I rarely go offroading but when I do, it's on easy trails so I didn't feel the need to get heavy duty frame mounted sliders.

I got these from AVID: https://avidoffroad.com/cart/index.php/2005-2011-toyota-tacoma-sliders.html

I just mounted them on to see if they fit properly. I'll still have to paint them.

Those bolt-on's look like they have an angle to them? If so, they should work a lot better than regular side steps for preventing door dings. They look nice.

    How much do they weigh?

If someone knows, if the weld-on and bolt-on are made of the same "heavy duty" materials, why didn't Avid just have it bolt-on to the frame without the need for drilling? I can't imagine a huge weight savings with the gussets and mounting plates.

You could probably have it converted to weld-on sliders pretty easy IF that's something you ever wanted in the future.

These weigh about 40 lbs each and have a 14 degree angle to them. According to AVID, the tubing are made out of the same one they use for the frame bolted version. It sounds like they use all the same tubing thickness for all their sliders but you can always email them to confirm.

The ones I got cannot be converted to weld-on because they don't bolt to the frame. They bolt to the body of the truck using the existing holes for side step running boards (6 bolts on each side). However, the frame bolt-on version could probably be converted to weld-on.

    "Light-duty rock sliders?" That's a bit oxymoronic.

If it bolts to the body it isn't going to work as a rock slider. I'd rather have a weak aluminum tube step that will bend than a strong one that will cause damage at the mounting points on the cab.

i cant imagine the body damage that will occur when the weight of the truck is put on these...

From the sounds of it, he doesn't get into situations where this might happen. I know it's the unpopular opinion in TacomaWorld, but not everyone needs heavy duty rock crawler equipment.

As long as you use these for side steps they should be just fine

It's an issue of the marketing, IMO. They're steps, not rock sliders, so they shouldn't be marketed as rock sliders.

weight of sliders, without the off road or collision protection
for more cost than a used pair of actual sliders

    lol

surprised they don't rip the threads out from their own weight and person standing on it
regular ones ($200 used) are thin light aluminum that barely weighs anything

I don't always buy a historically 4x4 truck with horrible gas mileage to make the worthy trade-off of being able to access beautiful nature views no one else can

but when I do, I don't access beautiful nature views

True. Maybe a more accurate way to describe them would be running boards that look like rock sliders. Anyhow, AVID describes them as sliders and mentions light duty but I won't be testing that out. I solely got these due to the looks and to use the kickout as a step to get my tools from my truck bed.

Thanks for reiterating that. I primarily use these as steps because they angle up so they allow you to get deeper into the truck bed versus other steps that have a foot plate that drops down and also lowers your clearance.

Where are you finding actual sliders that cost less than $450? I've checked the used market and the lowest one I've found was $700 and not in great condition either. The prices go up for long beds too which is also harder to find used than it is for short beds.

the ones on my truck that were $275
    Seen multiple like that

    upload_2022-8-4_18-24-2.jpg

I bent step bars on a rock making them scrap. The best course of action if one finds themselves in possession of step bars is to immediately sell them to get some money out of it to put towards sliders before quickly managing to turn them into scrap on a trail in a matter of seconds

given that new sliders can be around $700, if you see a person asking that price used, you can use persuasion (an offer) to negotiate a more realistic price
then subtract the $200 you can sell something like Nerf bars to a pretend 4x4er as part of achieving a better price

What matters OP is that you like them and serve the function you wanted them for. I recall seeing a cheaper slider around, but it was a DIY weld together kit, so not quite apples to apples comparison.
