Good. I work at a gear and axle shop in Sacramento and the left carrier bearings on 1st gen Tacomas and 3rd Gen 4Runners are almost always spun. Almost every time. Trust me, a bk (bearing kit) will do you good.

We are talking about a stock vehicle here, with standard psi.

That article is complete garbage, wow!
EDIT: wow, that article is bad. Technical details are fine, but complete garbage on the advice and fear mongering. "AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS" HA! what do you think offroading is?

Yes, it will create binding, yes it will wear u-joints and tires. but over THOUSANDS of miles.

Your truck will not suddenly fall apart.

I've driven many many miles in a lifted toyota with 35s at 12 psi and completely bound up the drivetrain on sandstone/slickrock as a normal course of action more times then I can count. I've never broken a u-joint, axle, or anything. If you think driving 4wd on dry pavement on occasion will suddenly break your truck then you need to learn more about the strength of your vehicle. If it does break then you have some serious maintenance issues.

I've witnessed a tacoma break a front cv-shaft on slickrock, and it was abused hard. He was bouncing it and using a lot of throttle to get up an obstacle. It takes a lot of abuse to damage these trucks.

Don't listen to that person. IFS has come a long long way since the early 90s.

Solid fronts are stronger, and might be a good choice if you think wheeling is mashing the accelerator pedal, but IFS is plenty, and way more comfortable.

I sold my SAS Toyota for an IFS rig because it was so much more comfortable. I can't quite do the same things, but it was a no-brainer.

I got the Eaton TrueTrac installed today. Will have to test it out on a patch of wet grass or similar to see how it engages. Have kept the old (fully open) diff, although not sure what I wil ever do with it.

The reason for the original question was that I did not understand why open front and rear diffs would behave that way when centrally locked. They should still spin freely against their counterpart. Well, I still don't understand that.

The way you're wording things sounds weird.

You kept your old diff, as in you had an extra one, got the locker installed, then the diffs replaced?

Or do you mean your third?

And what do you mean "behave that way when centrally locked?"

A differential is either open, or locked. If it's locked, both ends whether it's an axle shaft (rear) or cv axle (front) will spin together.

If it's open, one end will spend independently from the other if one is free of any resistence. In other words, when a vehicle is stuck...and you have one wheel spinning. This is because the spinning wheel has no resistence so all the power goes to that one side.

Open differentials on an axle allow each wheel to spin at different speeds, which allows them to take corners.

When it comes to the whole truck turning, the front ans rear axles take a slightly different path around around the corner, so each one travels a slightly different distance. When you lock them together with the transfer case, they bind up front to rear, even through the individual wheels on each axle are free relative to each other. On an AWD vehicle, the transfer case is replaced with another differential, which allows the front and rear axles to do their thing without binding.

Stop putting it in 4x4 on dry pavement and doing tight turns. Unless you love spending money on expensive repairs.

There's no reason to put in 4x4 in a parking lot and start doing 3 point turns
