Trying to ID this insect (European hornet???) that is using my shop as a new home - a bunch still flying around/going in and out of a 3/4" diameter hole (should have covered it 24+ years ago, but NO issues till yesterday.

Got stung once or twice (still not sure) on the back of my head when closing the man door for the day @ 1 PM yesterday. Hurt like hell for 6+ hours afterwards (still notice it now - 8 AM).

    Any ideas on ID???PXL_20220802_220835612_2.jpg Screenshot_20220802-224153.jpg

It's a Eurpean Hornet they're also known as brown Hornets or Giant Hornets . They're commonly found in the Midwest or Eastern seaboard and originally introduced in the late 1800's

OK guys, thanks for the replies......that didn't take long!!!

308 Savage - my original thoughts were either Murder hornet or the Cicada killer, but after looking at a bunch of pictures and the one I killed decided it wasn't either. No yellow on cicada killer's face and less yellow on the abdomen.

As US Marine said, I am leaning towards European hornet. That is supposedly the only 'true' hornet found in Ohio.

Now I gotta figure how to get Sevin dust inside a 3/4" diameter entry hole to the nest.....any suggestions on that??

Put the dust in a squirt bottle, such as one for ketchup, and blast it into the hole.

    not enough.
Just don't try to set it on fire because a local did that here...and started a mid sized fire on the mountain... luckily it rained that night and helped the firefighters.

Won't be doing that!!!! They are inside the wall of my pole building!!!!

Did burn a bald faced hornet nest (almost the size of a basketball) at my camp in Pa several years ago. Was on the overhang of the front porch. Waited till dark - had the hose ready, 2 cans of long distance wasp/hornet spray (to get any live ones that fell out) and a home made torch!!!! LIT it up and watched it burn!!!! The only issue afterwards was the white paint was blackened from the fire - NO structural damage.

NO MORE bald faced hornets the next day!!!

Ph.D. in entomology here. Not a cicada killer or murder hornet. Basic European hornet. A quick and fast but safe insecticide is Dawn dish detergent with water in a squirt bottle. Or the Sevin will work, use a turkey baster or any air puffer.

There are a lot of things in life that I’m happy to tackle myself. Bees/hornets/wasps/scorpions? Not on that list. They’re why God invented pest removal services.

This. Works like a charm. Put in a pump-up sprayer, put the wand nozzle in the hole on wide spray pattern and let it rip. Or, if you feel lucky, you can get a Bug-A-Salt and wait for one to crawl out the hole. Crown of barrel must be less than six inches from your target if you want to have half a chance. Closest thing to hunting Cape buffalo you are ever going to experience. I've been hunting red wasp this way. Sometimes I prevail. Sometimes. Can only imagine the trepidation of facing down your hornets!
