At sea level and without long climbs it behaves normally. At elevation or with a loaded bed just use the ECT button.
On the highway it's fine and pretty good on gas I find.

Could be so this truck had only 260 miles or so on it when i took it for a short test drive. On the other hand when a picked up my new sr5 v6 4x4 from the dealer, it came in with less than 1 mile on it. When i drove the 160 miles home it was way peppier. The truck has some decent get up, and go.

I personally feel the 2.7L I4 (aka 2TR) is great in my ‘05 RC 5MT but a dog with AT AC 3rd gen.

Granted the third gen transmission is “learning” but given what I’ve read and what I noticed during test drives, it doesn’t seem adequately satisfying to me. If I could have bought a new 2020 AC 5MT w I4 two years ago I most likely would have. But that option ended in 2018.

Test driving the AT AC I4 was disappointing compared to the v6. The third gen is a bigger and heavier truck than the second gen but this engine is the same in terms of specs. It’s not vastly overpowered for my 3500 lb ‘05 RC. It can barely hold cruise up a grade at highway speed without any load.

The I4 does have torque at low RPM which is awesome, the v6 w stock tune really sucks with low RPM torque.

For AT, I’d go v6 100% of the time.

Just go drive both, the differences are noticeable.

That 3rd gen 4wd tacoma is only a few hundred lbs. less than what my 2001 v8 4.7 4wd tundra was. You couple the I4 in the 3rd gen taco, and you've got yourself a turd.
As far as the v6 having no low end torque, my v6 sr5 access cab really isn't all that bad. Its not quite as much as what my 4.7 tundra had, but i've got no complaints either.

I really notice the difference between driving my 2002 RC Tundra and 2016 DC Tacoma. Even more so with 4.56 in the Tundra, it jumps while the v6 needs to be rev'd.

Kinda unfair doing AT vs MT though and I've driven a tuned 3rd gen which also jumped when you mash it. I think a lot of the AT trouble can be addressed with tuning, which explains the plethora of tunes available.

Just interesting how different trucks feel significantly different to drive.

i have the same truck and it's been very reliable so far. you will get used to using the entire powerband. may be a bit slower than the 6 cylinders but it's bulletproof and has pretty good torque for what it is. it should suit your needs just fine. remember the ECT button when you tow and use s4.

We’ll, finally made a decision. Decided the v6 would check a few more boxes for me.Bought a 2022 v6 access cab 4x4. Love the truck even though I’ve only driven it 100 miles from the dealership. Thanks for everyone’s advice, hopefully this v6 will be as reliable as the I4.

it will, don't let the spin on crew convince you otherwise, yeah there have been a few in a several hundred thousand failures, but I will take those odds. Not poo-pooin the 4, it has a proven track record as well.

Great engine, 2nd only to the 22re as far as reliability go's. By todays standards the most reliable. If it's got a manual gear box, then go for it.

Not even close, but you'll can still get 300k without major issues. 6k (+/-1k)OCI will get you there.

Idk, so far no complaints with the stock tune in my 2020 sr5. Both my tundra and tacoma have that 3.90 axle ratio. The tacoma feels very much the same as the tundra in the first 4 gears, but has those 2 extra overdrive ones to get that fuel economy.

I never had good luck with the 22re in my toyota's. One engine had a crank failure, another needed a timing chain at 80k miles.

I guess there is always the odd bad engines. I've had 3 good ones. 84 runner, 85 x-cab PU, and a 90 2dr runner. All trouble free, and all well over 350k miles.

Loved the look of the 2 door.
