I'm not sure exactly how Toyota does things. I've owned several Toyotas, first time Tacoma owner though. They use synthetic oil with my truck. They've used synthetic in every Toyota I've owned. I would assume that's standard but it doesn't seem to be the case by doing a little research here and elsewhere. The oil type and change interval seems to vary pretty greatly here. I just got my service done at Toyota. Sat there 2 hours and 15 minutes for an oil change and tire rotation. That's just way too long in my opinion. Ofcourse Toyota recommends their oil. Anyone switch out to a different oil, such as Mobile 1. I'd like to have my service done at Toyota but I'm not gonna sit there for 2 hours + every oil change. Another shop in my area that I trust uses Mobile 1. Also, I put 20×10's on my truck and the dealer didn't mention anything about it. I thought they would have warned me that it voids some portion of my warranty, glad they didn't.

They use a synthetic 0W-20 toyota genuine which I believe is an Idemitsu formula but it's blended/packaged by ExxonMobil. It's a very good oil high TBN high Moly so IMO slightly better than M1. Either or should be fine as 2 hours of wait is a bit crazy (did they at least wash your truck?) but both are good oils and you'll just need to figure out what your time's worth.

Matt, there are countless oil change questions and answers in this forum, along with warranty questions and answers.
If you type in to Google "3rd gen Tacoma Oil Change" it will link back here and you will get hours and hours of reading on your questions.
    Do the same for warranty.
    Good luck!

Always make the first appointment of the day for an oil change to avoid waiting. If you go in without an appointment or at 3 in the afternoon, 2 hours isn't unreasonable.

I have used a lot of different oils but have come back around to Toyota branded stuff. I have read that it has a high molybdenum content-higher even then Liqui-Moly. I just got 18 quarts from the dealer for about $8.15/qt, so it's a little less then some of the boutique stuff out there. I ran Shell Rotella gas for a while because Advance Auto had it for $2.99/qt. I bought everything they had lol. The Project Farm channel on YouTube is good, but somewhat anecdotal, for testing and comparing lots of different things, including oil. Bobistheoilguy.com is a good resource, too.

I waited 3.5 hours for n oil change/tire rotation on my Ford the other day, but the dealer only has one lift that can pick it up. On my personal stuff, I don't trust anyone else to work on it if it is a job I can handle/not warranty work. The master techs are not the ones doing oil, brake and tire jobs at dealers (I was the highschool kid doing those things at a used car dealer years ago). It takes me a lot longer, but I know it's done right.

Ya gotta figure, they are draining a "hot" engine. If i change oil at home, the truck has to be sitting a couple hours and cold, so i can drain as much old oil as possible. I assume they start draining your truck and let it sit, draining for a little while since it was driven there.

I've never heard of anyone wanting to drain oil while the engine was cold...
Common practice had always been to drain hot oil for fast and complete draining.

Haha! Nope, didn't wash my truck. I've always planned on waiting an hour. They previously would send a text questionaire after the service visit and 1 of the questions was if you waited over 59 minutes. And ofcourse I realize that the coronavirus screwed everything up, I'm sure they are short staffed like everywhere else. But you hit the nail on the head, what's my time worth. Fortunately this particular dealer is right next door to a diner so I went in there and grabbed a bite to eat. But even after that I was still waiting an hour and a half. Killed some time walking the lot for the hell of it. They had my same exact truck, only a different color, with 33k miles for $49k. I was astounded. I knew they were marking them up but geez, I paid $38 for mine 2 and a half years ago..

I've always tried for an early appointment but I made this appointment a month out and they still only had an 11:00am.

I waited 4 hours for the Chevy dealer to warranty 1 tire on my work truck a couple months back...tire was already off the truck. I had a 9 AM appointment

At least my local toyota dealer has free soda and snacks

Your wait time in the dealership has nothing to do with how fast the techs work, but more to do with the how many vehicles they currently have to work on.

I average about 2 hours to do the oil change and tire rotation in the drive way without a lift. The most time consuming part is using spare tire as placeholder. Oil filter, to do it cleanly, takes time too. You gotta drain the filter first, and then remove the filter, change filter material and o rings, torque to spec. A spin-on filter I'd say maximum 2 mins, Toyota's cartridge filter, I don't think anyone can do it properly under 10 mins.

And that's why I told everyone don't take your Toyota to one of those drive thru oil change places that boast 5 minute oil change, there's just no way they could change the filter that fast.

I've always changed my own oil and I always drain it cold.

    Are you bathing in it?

I might get oil on my fingertips from the drain plug, but that's it.

I like to drink a little of it, that way I can tell if I'm changing it too early or late. When it's hot I can't drink enough to tell....

When i had toyota care, it was at most 45 minutes from the time arrived to time left. They did their 0w-20 6 qt synthetic oil and tire rotation change pretty painless.
As far as brand oil, my dealer always put in mobil1 extended service. Maybe they have a deal arranged with the mobil oil change shop next door, idk.

It's pretty much common knowledge that you first get the engine up to normal operating temperature (mentioned in most oil change instructions.) Warm oil flows out better... less of the old oil / contaminates remain inside the engine stuck to the walls of the oil pan and other engine parts.
edit: think of it this way... in the kitchen what removes more oil/grease/crap off dishes better... having the water hot or cold?

I buy Toyota oil from the dealership as well as air and oil filters,... they are about the same price as my local stores (Toyota oil is not at those places).
You can even get them shipped from the dealer as well.

Screw driving to the dealer and wasting 2 hours just waiting to see if they did everything right.
I can do a full service in less than 30 minutes at home with a cold beverage:thumbsup:
