I think $42,980 is the base MSRP for a Limited short bed 4x4.

Nightshade adds a few dollars to the price. Presuming, this is a Nighshade that's what I have seen as of late for instock Limited trim.

Last year Toyota was getting wild with configurations as I saw some Limited long beds, can't recallvif any of those were Nightshade, I think Nightshasdes are gone for 23.

I didnt even realize there were separate Limited Trim levels, just Googled Limited MSRP. 2023 will probably be kind of a weird model year as it's probably the last of this generation.

I didn't read through all of the responses, but why on earth would you trade in a perfectly good truck with only 65K on the clock for basically the exact same truck (if I read your OP correctly). Plus you would be going right back into debt.

You can rationalize it all you want, but if I were your financial advisor I would tell you this is not a sound financial decision. But as I am fond of saying, some financial decisions are emotional and I get it!

    Good luck either way brother!

I 2023 will be the year of the SR5 Toyota probably can squeeze out the most revenue with that trim. Nighthsade got the Pro tailights, no sense in using them on the Limited now that the 3rd gen is on the verge of retirement, and it also got a unique grille. SR5 Chrome package will use the TRD chrome tailights, so there will probably be less TRDs built which will probably be influenced by the amount of lockers, and scooped hoods Toyota receives.

2022 TRD Sport replaced the Nightshade trim in the 4Runner line up. Tundra didn't need an additional package for an all new truck. I don't know if and when the Nightshade option went away on Camry, and Sienna.

I'm not sure if I 100% understand what you are saying. I paid for my state tax (NY) based on my purchase price (47k) minus trade in (33.6k) which was $13.4k. If I took the original 26k trade in and they agreed to sell me the 47k truck for 39.4k....the delta is still $13.4k.

NY DMV does it this way...maybe other states do it differently.

Yup, almost the exact same truck only 5 years newer with zero miles and and a few more goodies. I researched resale in my area and found that I could get an additional $2K selling it myself AND that even building a new one on the Toyota website, I could save about $2K. So I guess the deal wasn't as good as it could have been, but an interesting 1st world problem not many people get to contemplate.

I’m having difficulty understanding the post you responded to as well, mostly because I don’t know what “full bore taxes” means, but the way it works everywhere is that when trading in, you only pay taxes on the difference.

Obviously if the trade in value rises, or the purchase price of the vehicle lowers, or both, the taxes go down.

Other than safety sense and a power seat, what has changed since then?

I have a 17' Limited, my buddy just got a 22 OR and mine had more options than his... other than the two things I mentioned above... besides a warranty and less miles, you're just paying more for the same truck IMO.

Did you have any intention of trading in the truck before they approached you with the offer? Seems to me they'll get to ring the cash register twice. Once on your trade and again on the difference in price selling you the new one.

I'd keep it and enjoy the extra money in your pocket, you already have a nice truck

It's just a tactic to keep you in continuous payments

Manual seat adjustments don't count as 'options' bro. Just kidding, your buddy probably bought the base OR package and you have the limited with the roof, leather, premium sound etc. So yes, you would have more options minus the newer android/carplay and power seat.

Unsure about other states but in Virginia you pay sales tax on the entire price of the vehicle. There's no discount on sales tax or property tax for your trade in.

You’re right, and that’s an awful approach.

I found a list of states that don’t credit the trade in on the taxable amount, in addition to Virginia (true as of 2019):
    DC
    Hawaii
    Kentucky
    Michigan
    Montana

And then there’s a handful that don’t charge vehicle sales tax at all.

KBB says my 2017 is worth 37,500 to 40,500 trade in and 39k-42k private party, but it's only got 13k miles and that doesn't account for the added aftermarket junk. That's still significantly more than I paid for it new though. :D

I don't see the value of trading for a new 45k+ Tacoma except for maybe a manual trans. They haven't changed that much and I'm not into the whole shortage/bidding war thing right now. :notsure:

Edit: Then again, Black would be nice.

    A few.
Most states do only charge tax on the amount of the difference bewtween the selling price of the new vehicle and the trade value of the trade in. No idea if Virginia is one of them The the few states that do charge the full sales tax amount and no tax credit for the trade are, in a sense charging u tax twice on the same vehicle since it was already paid on the trade in.

Mostly electrical shit that nobody cares about.
I think you're combining two decisions into one.

    1) If you subtract 33k from whatever you paid for the 2017 and divide over the five years, did you get a good deal? Most likely, yes. There's a good reason these trucks hold their value.

    2) If you wanted to buy a new truck would you pay $48k for it? Yeah, that's gonna be a no from me, dawg.
