Anybody in the PDX area know of a good place, within about 30 min to 60 of the city, to take a new Taco for some unpaved roads?

Nothing crazy, a gravel or dirt road with some ruts in it would be a great. Just a few bumps for the kids, to get em away from the video games on a really hot day.

I understand Tillamook State Forest, Mount Hood and Camas have some OHV trails, but we have to stay close to home, within cellphone range this weekend.

Just got the truck last Saturday, and after a long work week just want to do something fun with it.

    that’s pretty much the list.

TSF has the biggest trail network of the 3. The Gifford Pinchot (near camas) only has a few short trails. The rest there is just gravel roads.

You can find really any logging area or state forest off of 26 or 6 past Hillsboro.

Since you say you’re a noob it’s probably worth pointing out: it’s fire season. You are required to carry a full size axe, a shovel, and water in any high danger area. You will get a nice ticket if you don’t and they looooove to pull people over that are out and about messing around or scouting for elk in August.

I thought it was a shovel and fire extinguisher that are required?

It might be a fire extinguisher by law? I’ll have to look. Every time I’ve been pulled over they ask me to show them how much water I have. But my Weyerhaeuser permit says I have to carry a 5 lb fire extinguisher, so maybe the extinguisher is the formal law.

I had seen Fire Extinguisher when ordering my ATV permit, but this is all great advice, @kmorgan3

Thanks, all! I think we’re just gonna hit the Sandy river today. And I’ll plan on doing more research and checking out TSF when things cool off.

shovel and either fire extinguisher or 5 gallons of water are required. Axe is not required.

Turns out it’s dictated by county and the services (BLM vs NFS). In Coos it’s 1 gallon, an axe, and shovel. Moral of the story: check the local area.
