"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a filing made public this week it was launching the probe, after receiving reports of 2021 Ford Bronco SUVs experiencing a loss of power at highway speeds. The examination covers nearly 25,500 vehicles, NHTSA said.

The regulatory agency said it had been weighing whether to open the defect investigation since late May, when the agency said it received multiple petitions from Bronco owners to take action. In a meeting last month with Ford Motor Co., NHTSA staff learned the alleged loss of power is a result of catastrophic engine failures due to the engine valves failing, the agency said in the filing."

"Ford identified the root cause of the alleged defect as interference between the valve and piston within the 2.7-liter EcoBoost engines, which can result in the engine locking up, NHTSA said. The regulator has identified 26 reports that related to the alleged defect in the Bronco."

Isn't this the same 2.7 that's been in the F-150s for a while? I imagine just tuned a bit differently... Interesting.

I had the same thought. Doesn't seem like a little tweaking here and there would cause catastrophic failures

That has been the most reliable engine in the F150 since 2015.

Ford has identified the root cause of this issue as the valve “keepers” not holding the retainer in place, which allows the valve spring to detach from the valve, resulting in interference between the valve and piston. This interference can cause an engine lockup. Based on an initial review of the applicable materials, the NHTSA has decided to grant the petition and open this preliminary evaluation to assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.

    sounds like a qc issue

At least nothing has changed at Ford and “Quality is Job 1”. My neighbor and I both owned 1985 Rangers back in the late 1980s and both cracked the piston rings, causing serious blow by. The PCV valve and system would literally pour oil in the air filter canister. Owned nothing but Toyota’s and Honda’s since then....

I read this a while back and looked into it. I was also interested because the 2.7EB in the F150 has been an awesome engine for them how this could happen? For now it seems to be ONLY on the bronco. :goingcrazy:

I have been looking for the problem to surface in the F-150. Haven't seen anything yet, I keep hearing the engines are different in the Bronco from what's in the F-150, but the issue might pop up in later 2.7 F-150s.

Ford at least knows that bumpers should be mounted to the frame.

Not gonna lie, the 2dr Bronco v6 was my first choice when I was car shopping, with the 4Runner and Tacoma being second but considering how difficult it is to get a Bronco at the moment, much less a 2 door, I just didn't want to wait 2 years so I just went to my local Toyota dealership and there was a Tacoma with almost the exact build allocated. The only thing was the color (wanted Army Green or Lunar Rock but the truck was MGM) but I got my truck a month after I put down my deposit. From the day I put down my deposit, it was still "Allocated". Built 3 weeks later, shipped and arrived 5 days after. Quickest turnaround I've seen so far. Guess it's a good thing I went with the Taco instead of the Bronco since I dodged a bullet on first year issues.
