Yep, had one here a couple of weeks ago; most of the Interac/POS systems were down across the province for over a day. Everyone at work was whining like gut-shot dogs about how they couldn't buy gas, food, etc... I genuinely never noticed.

It did add a noticable charge.
The first few years I was on the demand rate, the largest electric motor I have is the old air compressor, a 3hp iirc.

Armed with about 24 months worth of bills I called them saying that obviously nothing commercial was happening here.

They put me in GS - small with a stern warning about passing 700kwh.

That’s lucky! The guy here was telling me in this instance it would be like an $800 bill for electric then $900 for the demand charge, and I think it followed the bill for 6 months or something silly like that. It’s understandable why everyone hates us I guess. I just tell them I’m an electrician, not in the billing dept.!

For a small business bills like that are crippling, fortunately it is just me here mostly napping anyway working diligently so I don't use too much electricity.

Settin’ a new peak demand rate is a bend over signal for the utility Co. Years ago the gas plant I worked at ran electric all night then switched over to steam before the Mornin…….every :frusty: single :frusty: day :frusty:. Only take away was I gained tons of experience. Electrical grid was weak back then.

At the way back job the demand was calculated on quarter hour intervals.

Starting a large load, like a 700 ton chiller for example at 8:55 cost 5 minutes demand.
Starting it at 9:00 cost 15 minutes.

If they let you start it at all. Had one machine with a 4160 start winding. Two starts per day max.

Powder coat buddy bought this $550 electric motor kit for his dump trailer jack, he got it on and wired up and hit it with his loader and pulled the motor off. Luckily there were enough threads left I made some long studs for it and added some nuts.

I had 4 units on 4160 (3100 tons total) and 3 smaller units (around 1300 tons total) on 480.

It was 24 hour production so the larger units were on continuously except for summer/winter plant shutdowns.

The smaller units were put on line as needed, generally weeks at a time.
