Hey so weirdest happened this morning. I have a 2018 Tacoma trd off-road, just shy of 85k miles.

this morning, when I was driving out of the garage I put her in drive and she wouldn’t move. Reverse, nothing. I shut it off and and then started it again. Now it drives but every time I touch the brakes it’s goes full lock and sends me lurching forward.

I have no ideas. I’m pretty good with cars, but I’m stumped. I don’t feel safe driving it if the brakes are malfunctioning. This is the first time I had any sort of issues since I bought the truck new.

Do you have access to a scan tool to see if there are any codes? Could try unhooking the negative battery cable for a few minutes to see if that clears up a possible glitch.

I don’t have any codes, but I’ll try unhooking it.

When you say, "I don’t have any codes," have you verified that with a scan tool which has ABS and TCM capability, or is that simply based on the MIL not being illuminated? When you put the transmission into 'D' or 'R', what precisely happens? Do you feel any indication of movement at all, or does the transmission not seem to be engaging? Do the revs drop down or increase?

so at 60k I opened my drums and inspected then cleaned everything.

After work I tried the truck again and had zero issues since. I think it must’ve been a stuck e brake. I’ll have to run through the system and look for any corrosion or whatever else could cause it to stick.

I was able to recreate the symptoms by engaging the E brake, that’s why I’m so sure it’s what it is.

I had the same thing happen to me when multiple taillight bulb wires stripped and were shorting out. The truck would brake hard and "SAFETY SYSTEM MALFUNCTION" came up on the dash. Shrink wrapped the wires and never came back. Something to think about if the issue returns
