I've been running Flowmaster Super 40 series for about a decade and I'm over the sound (loud, drone, etc.,) that comes with it.

I'd like to go return to something that is similar to the stock sound of the truck - No increased loudness.

Is there anything performance related I should be concerned with while returning? I.e., is simply going to a reputable muffler shop and asking to return it to stock noise levels enough - or is there a specific muffler I should be looking to install?

Plenty of OEM/stock options available in your area it seems.

The inquiry was about whether or not an aftermarket (performance based) muffler is worth it or not while minimizing noise.

Also, 5-7 hours driving distance is not my area.

I’m confused, not sure what you’re asking, you have an aftermarket setup, are not happy with it and want it to sound stock without going back to stock?

I don't know if returning back to stock or going after market makes a difference. Is there a difference? Is there a reason to go one or the other price aside?

I think going back to OEM stock would be the best decision on your part. I assume it would cost about the same, maybe a little more, possibly less, than having a muffler shop customize your aftermarket system to run quieter. And I think your truck would ultimately run better with an OEM setup as opposed to restricting your current setup to run quieter. Not sure if this helps, but best of luck.
