Yes a single plant. This is potato country.

 

I’m told Volcanic soil is the best for spuds. Hard to believe where some of ‘em were.

 

The neighbor garden was lucky if they grew a dozen regular size potatoes on one plant.

She also mentioned that she has to treat the soil with something. To make it rich with nutrients. Along with age she sleeps a lot so it keeps on getting push outwards.

 

That's pretty normal for Russets. I mean a dozen good sized taters from one plant, not bad.

Potatoes are not super heavy feeders but like any garden plant, yes well treat your soil like a loved one. Treat it with the good stuff.

 

I remember lotsa Folks with Brand New Homes grew spuds instead of grass for the first couple years after moving in. Only reason I heard was to “work the soil”.

 

She was averaging a 7 to 8 potatoes per plant.

She always says her soil is getting tired from years of planting. As a kid, I didn't know what she meant.

Her garden area was 125ft by 50ft.

 

Maybe Mc Donalds fries are getting too expensive.

Absolutely. Not a good practice. Rotate crops. Grow green manure.

 

Do you use straw in your raised beds?

 

No. I use well decomposed compost (saw dust and manure mostly)

 

Nothing got rotated. When I started helping her she was in her 80's.

Is the green manure like colic?

I could handle colic without puking. I was bad.

 

What does sawdust does for garden? My friend uses sawdust in his garden but I don't think he knows why. Someone suggested it to him.

Saw dust and manure are mixed together. Bacteria with the aid of nitrogen (simplified, I know) break down the the sawdust. This serves as a mulch.

Mulch = water retention, weed suppression, cooler roots, plant nutrition, healthy soil biome., etc

Saw dust alone, not the best. Depletes nitrogen when decomposing, which competes with plants for the N.

 

So the sawdust acts kinda like peat then.

 

My friend mixes the manure in the garden with the rototiller, after the plants starts growing he uses the sawdust around the plants. Nothing mix in with the sawdust. I always thought moisture and weed control.

 

Green manure = clover grown nice and big then tilled into the soil. Really healthy
