K&N SO7020 oil filters

Hello all,

I don't post much and mostly search for answers which TW has had most. I'm a bit stumped and can't find anything on this. I'm doing my first oil change on my new to me 2020 tacoma v6 and I bought a KN SO7020. I was looking at a video and notice this filter, though recommended by Walmart (yes, I know first mistake) looks slightly different than the factory or other filters. It has black rubber caps on either end vs factory which is naked. Have any of you used this before? K&N website has no info. I'd like to do my oil change without having to go all the way back into town first but if I have to I will. Thanks all in advance.

I'll do my tire rotation first while I wait for an answer.

That filter style will work just fine... you are good to go.

 

Awesome! Thank you! I thought so but walmart is not the most reputable autoparts store. I'm going to order a case of oem filters and that way I don't have to worry about the 30min drive out there. Getting used to living in the boonies.

I use K&N. The part number for my 2018 6 cylinder is HP-7020. It is a premium 20K filter, although I change it every 5K miles.

 

Yes, I plan to do the 5k intervals on my truck too. I don't know when they did it last but I feel like it wasn't since the truck was new. The oil was fairly black and so was the filter. What I thought was the fuel pump seems to have been lifter tick. Nice and quite engine now. I'm eager to see those mpg gains!

Would you know what the maintenance light is set too and if I can set it for 5k if that's not the factory setting?

 

The Toyota TRD filter is built with closed end caps.

5000 miles is when the maintenance reminder light comes on.

 

Just use the regular oil filter from Toyota, they are only like $6.07, actually saving money too.

 

Iagree, I usually buy factory filters in bulk for my cars. It comes up cheaper and at least subaru and hyundai send you crush washers with the case. Half the oil change right there. This change just caught me in the middle of a lot of stuff so I didn't get the chance. Wally world had a good deal on kn and their stuff has been good for me in the past so I went with that. Would you know the factory part number of the top of the head? If not it's OK, I'll look it up.

 

No issue with K&N, but I just bought a 5pk of Toyota filters for $25 from Amazon.

My preference with the two examples from above would be the TRD one the right simply because the filtering media is synthetic versus the cellulose material for the left one.

Yep. I believe their “XP” series are their best filters and use the synthetic media.

 

I buy OEM - one of the dealerships runs a 2 for 1 deal on the filters, other than that the dealerships sell them for just over $4.

 

There was a time decades ago when Fram oil filters started self destructing and ruining engines. It wasn't common, but it was a known thing. Got to be known as "the orange can of death". Outside of this instance, I have never heard of an oil filter related issue. I've never known someone to tear down an engine and say "if only they'd used a better oil filter". I'm not saying that one filter might be better than another based on micron ratings, but I don't think it has any real consequence in terms of engine performance and longevity.

 

Oil filters do use one of two types of media. Possibly one is better than the other. The upper filter in each manufacturer’s line uses synthetic while their less costly ones use cellulose.

 

For historical interest:

Part of the Fram issue was that the glue holding the fiber (cardboard) ends of the filter could fail.

A bigger issue was the long term use of a cheap, poorly manufactured anti drain back valve. Engines that had the filter mounted sideways or upside down like a Ford 300, Chrysler 225 or 2.2 would knock on cold startup because the oil had drained back through the filter into the pan when sitting. Knocking = extra wear.


Many issues with manufactured products come from the factory floor: For example an out of tolerance machine or a worker doing a job improperly coupled with the issue being missed on inspection.

In the case of the Fram filters it was both a cheap design and also a poorly manufactured part -- a corporate decision to put out low quality parts with good quality advertising.
