So, after calling a local Toyota Dealership in attempt to purchase a new OEM CV Axle, I learned that there is a very large back order for these and it could be months before the dealership could get one. This means I have to buy an OEM Boot Kit and try to rebuild a CV Axle I have at home. Does anyone have experience doing this?

I've done it (with help from a mechanic friend)... not too hard. I think the hardest part was getting the clamps tight without the proper tool. A set of fencing pliers did the trick for me. I noticed a lot of 'how to' videos have you disconnect the tie rod but that wasn't necessary - just removed the axle/spindle nut, disconnect lower arm from spindle, crank the steering wheel and slide the axle out.

I've got a pair of factory axles in good condition if interested in going that route.

It’s not super hard. I’ve done several but the proper tools for the clamps really turn a 2 minute part of the job to 45 minutes of dicking around trying to Jerry rig something that’ll work. Here’s a link to @turbodb’s page on the subject. Very thorough and well documented.

If you want a shop in Camarillo to do it, Kevin’s Precision Alignment on Dawson Dr did both mine last Friday. Replaced both, not reboot. Outstanding integrity.

    Hey ShowStop, long time man....
You helped me with my clutch on my 04 years back....even gave me a beer because it was a hot day. Hope you’re well

I appreciate you reaching out. I just might take you up on the crimping tool when I’m ready to rebuild the CV Axle. Bringing back my TTORA days...

Does anyone have tips for removing old, sun baked Plasti dip from my motorcycle fairings that won't damage the color on the plastic. I must have put the coats on too thin cause this shit is not pealing off like it shows in their promotional videos. :frusty:

You think those adhesive removing rubber wheels might work? Might be not reach tight corners but it should make quick work on flat surfaces.

I was seriously considering that last night but I didn't have any in the garage.

Good idea, I'll give it try tonight. Best thing so far has just been rubbing with my fingers but I have blisters now

Mineral oil seemed to work after a minute of soaking but I'm scared it'll mess the plastic up. :notsure:

Hey Theo. Just saw this tag. Looks like those will work. I went fancy and got the knipex versions:

    KNIPEX - 10 99 i220 Tools - Ear Clamp Pliers, Front and Side Jaws (1099i220) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I3H6UIC

    KNIPEX - 50 01 180 Tools - Carpenters' End Cutting Pliers (5001180) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005EXO4J6

the end nippers aren’t as necessary for the boot repair, but I used them with light pressure to “grab and pull” the tensions strap. I figured I do enough reboots that it pays to have the “good” version of the tools but the one you linked should work just fine.

I ordered both of those tools you recommended.

They have about 53k conservative miles on them.
    I'll trade for a beer.

    Checking local first.
If nobody claims them by Friday, I will post on buy, sell trade and whatever other means necessary to get them out of my garage. Cheers!
