Yeah I guess when I die. I bought it brand new and it's always been a fixture in my life and I cannot see it in anyone else's care.

I so wish I owned a 1st gen Tacoma. I'd never sell it. I've owned a few 3rd gen 4runners. Knowing the quality Toyota was putting out back then, I'd never let it go. One day, one day.

Current plan is to keep my 1st gen indefinitely. But.. If the government were to enact some kind of a penalty or surcharge for using gasoline powered vehicles that would make me consider the cost/benefit of the Taco. Or if gas gets to $5-10/gal and stays there. In either case I'd probably still keep it but just drive it less, maybe retire it to farm use.

I think it's also likely that at some point insurance companies will start penalizing drivers who drive older vehicles that don't have telematics that track driver location and behavior. Depending on that surcharge that might also change my thought process.

If I'm ever able to import a 79 series Landcruiser that would also mean me putting a lot less miles on the Taco. Still probably wouldn't sell the Taco though.

I think when I get bored with it.

I like building up a truck and running it for a few years, then when a random person asks to buy it for a ridiculous amount I’ll probably let it go.

Not having antilock brakes has been a concern. Bay Area drivers and there sudden stopping and lane changes have me worried. But my brakes suck anyways, so that might not be an issue.

I'm hoping for never let mine go. My plan is to keep in good shape and hopefully one of my "Son" in laws will snatch it up after I'm gone, but who knows. Wherever it winds up, someone is going to be a happy camper to get their hands on it. I'm only averaging about 5k miles a year now, so it will be a relatively low milage Truck when I take the eternal dirt nap. I'll be surprised if I pass the 200k mile mark.

Well....I bought my '04 MT OR with 172k miles in the spring of '22 for $6k. The frame is super solid, the transfer case and tranny are great. I'm not sure when I'd give it up. I really enjoy the size and driving it. It does cost alot to fix some neglect but its better than a new car payment every month

I love mine to death and for a long time it's been my #1 must have even if money were no object. I've got 3 years left on the loan for it to be "mine" (and my payment is certainly much less than a new one) but it's definitely staying forever no matter the cost or effort involved.

The way I look at it, fixing and keeping these older vehicles running is way cheaper than making payments on a new one, and I keeps me out of the bars (for a while).
I don't mind putting a grand or two a year into a truck that I like.

Holes in all 4 corners of the body and a bed that is only a plastic factory bed liner was my breaking point. Drive train still good for another 200k with maintenance.

At work they make fun of me, because when a 1st gen pulls in, I always talk to them about it. Most of these people have no idea what tacoma world is anyway. We just talk about the truck. Lots over 400,000 miles, most of them have 1 ton dually trucks and are regular construction customers or construction business owners. The main comment is " hell I just love this truck, it always goes." " its paid for, it always starts, and I just like driving it." Some are pristine, some are beat all to hell. We load parts for excavators, dozers, or rental saws, or whatever and they drive away.
