Recently got my first Tacoma. The hood had a number of chips in the paint, so I thought I would try a DIY project. I got the color-matched touch up pen from Toyota, but it just doesn’t look right. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

That’s what DIY touch up looks like. How big are the splotches? Post a picture of the splotches with a dime.

Looks like your hood is faded.

Thanks for the replies. My initial hope was the hood was faded and the new paint would blend in over time.

You gotta polish that hood first. Toyota's white is single stage paint hence it oxidizes and gets chalky when not maintained. You need to buff it first, and then after applying touch up, wet sand the areas and polish again to blend it.

You could have the hood wrapped OEM color or black or any color you want for probably less than $200

Wraps don't stop rust they only hide it as it constantly edges forward on its path of total consumption.

The only fix is sand and paint.

If you're going to wrap something, you better have it prepped before you do or you might be in for some nasty surprise if you ever need to remove and redo the wrap.

I’ve had a few parts of vehicles wrapped (never a whole vehicle usually hoods or roof panels) and I’ve never had an issue but okay. They actually preserve the original paint pretty darn well.

or are you saying that just if they’re already starting to rust? Because none of the ones in my experience had rust yet.

Yeah what I'm getting at is that if OP doesn't properly treat those chips (assuming they were down to bare metal) a wrap won't stop them from rusting.

If the steel is sealed already a wrap only offers more protection usually.
