Size matters - 3G air filter is the GOAT

Man…….Toyota really did us a solid with the 3G air filter for the V6. Friggen massive. Purpose built for the extreme conditions you find off-road. Designed for desert racing by Mike Sweers and the top people at TRD! Mine is looking a little dirty so I might change it after the next trip, but generally it’s not a concern.



Below is the micro-filter for the 4.slo out of the 2G Taco for comparison. Now I know why my 2G buddies are always shaking out their air filters to prevent their trucks from throwing codes.

1st gen was the best and easiest to check. No contest haha.

 

But was it bigger?

 

I have to agree, it is a big fucking air filter! Definitely lots of surface area, which is a good thing when it comes to filters.

 

Mike Sweers said in a recent interview that the primary change for the 4G taco will be and even larger air filter. They are figuring out a new hood design to accommodate it.

 

They will need an even bigger "power bulge" in the hood for height challenged folks to squawk about seeing over.

 

At we ready to talk optimized pleating, or would that be too much for the 2G guys?

There is no comparison. There’s gotta be 10X the surface area allowing that heroic 3.5L to breathe freely.

 

I think the 2nd gen filter is a much deeper filter isnt it? Assume thats for surface area concerns. I agree though, turd gens got that one right for sure! Not to mention its in a better spot for accessibility.

Have to say though, Ive never thrown (or even heard of) a code for restricted air filter.

 

It's the same filter they use in the 4.0,4.6 and 5.7L Tundra's also

 

If they can make it interchangeable with my furnace I would be appreciative.

OP. Change your filter. It doesn't take much to blow these motors up.

 

I think I saw you shaking out your filter at the fishin’ hole last weekend.

 

When the 2G filter plugs it bungles the MAF and you get a code. A couple of my pals have these trucks. To be fair, they have aggravated their circumstances by running snorkels so they get all the dust from the convoy leader directly into their intakes through their snorkels.

 

Smart guys buying a 2nd gen. The don't want their truck to leave them stranded after trying to go up a small hill and their motors blow up.

Hold up. A snorkel is not for water crossings, but now, it's not for dust either. I feelz bad for each and every one of those Canadian 2019 Pro owners.

 

Driving a truck with the world’s best air filter isn’t without it’s risks. It calls for a higher level of driver.

Most grandpas opt for the 2G as they are risk-adverse and lack off road driving skills.

Isn’t it called desert air intake? Its meant to get “cleaner” air?
