Was washing my '19 TRD today. Noticed some bubbling on the hood where it meets the headlight. I'm honestly pretty shocked. So my question is, is there a defect, recall etc? I have no idea why that would happen. The truck is in great shape. I just hit 37k so that puts me out of bumper to bumper warranty. You think the dealer would do anything about this?20220814_153214.jpg

That's corrosion (rust) under the paint causing it. If there are no chips or cuts in the paint in that area it could be a quality issue where the steel wasn't properly prepared before primer/paint.

So what are the odds the dealer works with me on this? I drove my 2014 160k mostly highway and never had anything like this. To my knowledge, there are no scrapes or chips in that area.

No idea. Submitting the claim is really all that the dealer does for a warranty consideration, after that it's up to Toyota North America AFAIK. In any case, it doesn't hurt to ask the dealer.

New guy here, hi I can tell you there is a way to find out if you have a recall. Type in NHTSA.GOV/RECALLS you do not have to use all caps, then type in your vin# and it will tell you if your truck has any recalls

Did you purchase the truck new or have any accidents? I don't think it's common to see body rust on any Tacoma from 2nd Gen and newer unless there was some underlying damage.

Curious to know this as well. It’s never easy to tell from pics but it almost looks like there’s a tape line on the edges of the fender by the headlight.

I see you live in a snow / salt area. This was a frequent sight when I lived in the midwest / north on vehicles exposed to alot of salt, should it be happening to a 4 year old truck, probably not, I would try Toyota but based on your miles and year they are probably gonna say its related to the winter weather driving and not really help you out. They aren't even helping out many of the super white guys who have flaking paint, or the guy who lost a cylinder at 61k miles. Just not the same Toyota lately. Good luck.

Going by the body colored rock chips, it looks to me like the hood has possibly been repainted at some point?

Bought used. Carfax was clear. I actually found out about the fuelpump recall on the carfax, when i bought it. But no evidence of any accident. I have all the dealer service records from the previous owner also. The pic may look like a tapline but its probably just a reflection. Seeing it in real life it looks smooth and factory. There are a few small rock chips in different areas of the front of the truck, as I drive a lot of highway and its pretty heavy traffic, lots of semitrucks etc. But there is no rock chip or any marking near the seam where the rust is.

That could be starting from the inside, moisture gathering inside. I thought Toyota rust through warranty was 5 years. Wouldn't hurt to check although being second owner could make a difference. I don't know.

I agree. But they did have my 2nd gen on record with 160k on it and never any body issues. I drove the same route that I do now, but now it's much less frequent (mostly working from home now.) They treated my `14's frame, which wasn't that bad. I keep my trucks clean. I realize most of this doesn't matter in the dealer's eyes, but to me it seems like something that should not be happening so soon.

That's what I was wondering. My stepdad said that the paint should extend beyond the regular bumper to bumper. So I wasn't sure and figured maybe someone else a similar issue.

Carfax is a great resource, but definitely doesn't catch everything. There is a very high percentage chance that your hood has been repainted to cover up some sort of damage (not a typical rock chip damage) that didn't make it to the Carfax report. It's not that uncommon in my experience. Dealer could've taken the trade as damaged and did a quickie repair. At that point, they are concerned with quick, not rust prevention. Or if you purchased direct from an owner, he/she could have damaged the hood and not wanted to report it to insurance for any of a number of reasons. One response above indicated what I thought I could see, too - which is rock chips that are already covered with paint (not touch up). That's a good sign that the hood was repaired. Not saying it 100% was, but all things considered - second hand purchase, painted chips, rust.........all point to damage that was covered up and left you with rust to deal with.

Fair point. I suppose it's possible. Well, I guess I'll just let the dealer know and see what they say. I guess worst case if they say no I'll see about replacing the hood. Might be a chance to get a Sport hood or something. My stepdad has his own body shop, so maybe I can just go through him.
