I added a 3” strip of window tint to the bottom of my 22 windshield, it blocks hood glare, and changed the amount of ambient light that turns on the “auto” headlights. I like the strip of tint, so the first alternative was to alter the point the sensor turns the headlights on. I changed the setting to the least sensitive setting (-2). This setting still had the lights coming on too early, so the next option was to alter the sensor. Part searches had the Tacoma sensor at $90+, while other, newer Toyota models where less than $14, so I took a chance, and purchased one of the cheaper parts. I removed the Tacoma sensor, and compared it to the Camry part. The two parts had a different number of pins, but the tinted dome, the part above the dash, looked to be the same size, and assembly style. I removed the cheap part first, a little prying with a small blade screwdriver, and it popped off, the same for the stock Tacoma part. The cheap dome fit the stock sensor just like the original part did, and it already had less tint than the stock dome. I installed the new hybrid assembly and tried it, improvement, but the lights were still coming on too early. The second idea was to remove some of the tinted dome material. I used a file to make the outside of the dome thinner, then sanded it with fine grit crocus cloth, then buffed it with rubbing compound - this result is seen on the Right of the first photo (stock and cheaper part numbers are also shown). After measuring the modified dome thickness, I realized I could remove material from around the center concave shape. A couple of drill bits, turned by hand, made it easy to remove material in a controlled manner, stopping as soon as the bit touched the center of the dome, then on to a larger bit, and repeat. The second photo shows the concave side of the finished part. This result is working great, I may change the sensor sensitivity, as the lights are coming on after roughly 1/2 of traffic has their headlights on.

 

Gonna install my Garmin dash cam this weekend. Got a polarized lens cap and the dongle to link to the mirror. Any tips on the install from the knowledgeable?

Just an fyi. I put Velcro on mine so I could easily remove them if I needing to remove the centre console.

Take your time

 

Will take you 5 minutes. Two or three minutes more to adjust the view in live mode. I love mine, gives peace of mind given the way people drive nowadays.

 

Got the same setup. Install the power dongle then position the camera so you can't see it from your driving position as it is behind the mirror. Also if you have any sort of windshield inside cover keep the position of cam installation in mind. I have one of those hard folding covers and it just barely clears the camera.

 

Used it like a truck after a 13 hour day. 1400 lbs of earth moved into the chicken coop and grabbed a pallet off the side of the road

 

After restoring this vintage-ish axe, I DIYed some mounting brackets based on a couple of other ideas (while also spending an hour at Ace Hardware running back and forth to the truck and fitting parts together). Got the axe sharpened at a local saw shop and got a sheet on Etsy. Now I'm ready for zombies, firewood and fleeing society. Bonus photo: my cutting discs after chopping up steel plate.
