I've always viewed these threads as amazing places to learn. Especially the sharing. I know I have learned many things here and am grateful for all that's been shared and I take those learnings with me when I visit.

It's amazing what others have picked up/shared/found sources for/ that I was not familiar with. The area has an amazing history.

Civil discourse and learning are two things that are in short supply in general. This thread is full of good people that are intelligent enough to disagree with someone in a thought out, well worded reply. I consider us all lucky for that @turbodb

We're all familiar with the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. Perhaps not so much with the Great Basin National Park's grove. If I'm not mistaken, they are different species.

During a research mission in 1964, Donal Curry's coring tool got stuck in a tree and between a NPS Ranger and he, they cut the tree down. Curry never forgave himself for that act. You see, he quite possible had cut down the world's oldest living Bristlecone Pine at the time. However today, it's looking like the oldest tree (at ABPF) has some competition.

Bristlecones are amazing trees. If you haven't been to The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, it's worth a visit. But if you haven't been to Wheeler Peak in Nevada's Great Basin, I would highly recommend that. Aside from one of the darkest places in the lower 48, it's an amazing place. Lehman Cave is right below the peak. Wheeler Peak is 13,065' and easily reached on a hike from the campground. The hike is can be a bit difficult and weather can change at any time.

Did Wheeler and the caves about a decade ago. Good times.

edit: I just realized it was 13 years ago at the end of June. Time really does fly.

I was impressed by the tour and just blown away that you could stand at thirteen thousand feet and watch weather cross the basin today and stand in a cave whose temperature rarely changes over the course of time (and whose door makes the coolest noise in the tunnel).

Looking for some assistance. I'm a claims adjuster and our insured is responsible for damaging a building in Independence. Place has been closed for what appears to be a long time. Trying to find the owner if any so we can resolve damages.

If any of you live in the area and may be able to help me out please shoot me a PM. Can't put too much info out in public forum

My gandpa's brother was the doctor at Manzanar. US Government picked him up in the middle of the night and drove him out to the Owens Valley, told him they were going to make a camp for all local Japanese Americans there and where he wanted his hospital. Some other crazy stories have been passed down from Manzanar.

My relatives refer to it as just "Camp", as in when I was in "camp" or back when they put us in "camp".

That may be just my family. I have had the privilege of watching my family in multiple docs about the place. Another common term from Japanese Americans during that time when asked what they thought about having to go to "camp" is Shikata ga nai, aka, "it is what it is". My family was lucky enough to have people watch over their properties while they were in camp, many were not so fortunate.

70 years later my brother marries a local from Big Pine and now is one of the main employees at Manzanar, restoring it to how it was when occupied by the Japanese Americans.

    Some crazy shit.

The courthouse should have the public record for the address. That should include the owners name.

Meant to post this Friday night after my flight landed, but my Imgur app wasn't working properly: Does anyone know what happened with this fire south of Yosemite? I couldn't find anything about it in the news over the weekend, so I'm presuming it was put out. Looks like it was possibly along the Merced River, based on what I think is Half Dome and Clouds Rest in the first photo.

edit: No clue why the first photo is so big. Should be the same dimensions as the second.

The Red fire was discovered on August 4, 2022 between Red Creek and Illilouette Creek at 7,800 ft elevation. It is a lightning caused fire that is burning in the 2001 Hoover fire footprint. Fire crews are assessing natural barriers (like granite) to confine and contain the fire. There are no trail closures and no threat to infrastructure.

Webcams don't do it justice. It's almost black over Humphrey's currently.

I only shoot cell phone shots so I'm not that impressive. Plus I have to drive or climb up on my roof to get an unobstructed view of Humphry's. lol

Is there a place to get a GREAT trout dinner along 395? Bishop? Bridgeport? Some small mom 'n' pop tucked back in the hills?
