After getting a check engine light a scan of my 97 Tacoma 2.7-liter 4x4 revealed a P0420 code, indicating an issue with the Catalytic converter. I ran a bottle of DURA LUBE Catalytic Cleaner but that did nothing. Upon the advice of Scotty Kilmer, I removed the catalytic converter to soak in soapy solution overnight. When I removed it, I could see all the way through the unit. There appears to be no honeycomb structure or screening, etc. Is this normal or did the unit completely disintegrate on the inside? It is a 20-year-old aftermarket cat with a lot of miles on it. Any suggestions?

    Normal, no.

Replace it if your state requires smog. Straight pipe if smog is not required.

Well, got good news and bad news....

good news is I think you got your money's worth out of that cat.....no need to clean on that no more.....

Cat thieves are getting real good....cant even tell they've been there.....
take the good stuff and leave behind the rusty metal....

Instead of being a horses ass....I should of been more helpful.....cant help myself.

I actually like it that way....be temped to live with code.....
But its gonna make the engine run a little off....

Depending on which state your in, generic cats are fairly cheap, or your gonna need a second job.......

I bought a JC Whitny level one for about $150...
