I'm getting ready to buy a 2022 Tacoma 4x4 trd off road 4 door 5ft bed. I could use some advice on which size lift and tires to go with. I was thinking of a 6 inch lift ( BDS or Fabtech w/ coilovers and after market UCA's) along with 35s but am I better off with a 3 or 4 inch lift with 33s? I want to climb the powerlines around me which are steep with big rock gardens and the trails also have deep wash outs.

A 6” lift will basically total your truck, so plan on keeping it! Welcome to TW. Before the snarky SOBs chime in, I encourage you to scour the innumerable pages on this topic. Lots of helpful advice, but folks around here tend to get grumpy when these questions pop up a dozen times a day.

But since I’m here: have you lifted a truck before?

Since this is one of the most popular trucks on the road, I might recommend finding someone with a similar setup nearby and seeing how it would work for you. Car / truck guys are generally happy to show off their creations.

3” with 255 85 R16’s is always the right answer. As mentioned above a 6” lift destroys your new truck. Don’t do that.

Your lift height can't be bigger than your dick length, which is why so many Tacoma's stick to the 2-2.5" of lift range.

Are you from Hawaii? If so, 6 icnhes isnt big enough.

Bigger tires will require cutting, no matter what lift.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
    On a new $50k (?) truck.

I have a 6 inch drop bracket with full length bil 5100's (no spacers) and OME 887 springs up front for a total of 8 inches of lift in the front. I'm running 35's as well of course. My truck is broken

I'll say the unpopular thing - running big tires ruins the truck for not a lot of benefit. And as mentioned above, so does lift. :bananadead:

These trucks are more capable than people realize in their bone stock configuration. You might want to see what it can do before throwing money at it.

Also, height is not the limiting factor of tires OR clearance. Its the fender width that you have to clear. Good luck.

Yeah i have big 35's and a big lift and it definitely kills the fuel economy. It is more for looks than anything else, these trucks are very capable stock.

Do it, cut into the brand new truck to decrease performance. The 35s on an un-geared truck with solidify the poor performance. All around great choices

I have 35's and am not re-geared and it drives perfectly fine. Maybe it's the 3rd gen Taco's with the mini-van motor that need the re-gear if you go to 35's since there is already no down low torque to begin with?

Also, lifts+35's increases off-road performance, ground clearance, approach angle, etc. but it does hurt fuel economy performance.

Most popular lifts on Tacomas stay under 3” for all the reasons mentioned. If you do 3” or under you will have many better options available too. If you stay around 285/75 size tires you probably wont have to do much trimming to fit them but for sure a little, it also depends on the width and backspacing too. 35’s will require quite a bit although can be done but you will prob want a regear too. How much do you want to spend? It’s endless!!!

Is that more than 3 inch lift? That truck is destroyed now according to this forum.

With 12k you can do whatever lift size you want and done proper with wheels and tires to match. People on this forum are more into "overlanding" style rigs even though they have never actually overlanded a day in their life, it's really cringe and they don't have the self awareness to realize it. This forum is not representative of the real world, get what you personally like to look at everyday when you walk out the house.

Another member summed up these wanna-be's perfectly:

"Car Camping - v: open the trunk of your car, toss your 6 person family tent that was an impulse buy while you were shopping for gray sweatpants. Where it lands is where you pitch. You paid admission to be here. There is a full-amenity restroom within a shorter hike than the distance between your actual bed and master bathroom. There is also an electrical outlet to plug in your surplus Christmas lights and recharge your kid's ipad.

Boondocking - v: like car camping, except you bring your own electricity. There might be a 100 yard hike to a pit toilet. Your vehicle saw one whole quarter-mile of dirt to be here.

Overlanding - v: Exactly like boondocking but with a $1500 tent because the ungroomed floor attendant at Suburban Outback convinced you that sleeping on the roof of your car is the one thing that the professional National Geographic Stanley Livingston explorers do. He neglects to mention that lions of the Serengeti have no issues climbing a four foot aluminum ladder either, but who cares, because neither you or your tent will ever see them. You might have a lifted jeep as optional, but only if you have the common sense to realize that a tent mounted to your WRX's roof rack looks dorky as hell.

True Overlanding - adv: nothing anyone on this forum will probably ever do. Usually involves a convoy of land cruisers and fancy camera editing to make it appear that the nature show host isn't actually staying in a 5 star hotel between takes."
