Back in 2019 while traveling Ophir Pass, we found this Malibu trying to clear the trail. He had traveled for miles on this trail and was sitting on a part where he was blocked by what we 4-wheelers would consider a bump. The uncercarriage of the vehicle was very banged up. We eventually called for a tow truck to recover him from this point, spent some time talking with him, and collectively our group decided it would be a risk to help him out in anyway. That Malibu was a rental vehicle BTW. Sorry the pic was from a distance, we did drive by him though, that was a guy in our group in the jeep sitting next to him. We finally drove around him and wished him good luck, then had an awesome day ourselves.

 

I certainly could have made it alone, as there was no tugging or anything required. My concern was break down. In my mind was a recently posted Youtube video of a Jeep snapping a front axle (on what looked like 40s, go figure). Luckily it was part of a group and he was able get tugged back through the hard spots. There was also a recent post on FB about a 4Runner also losing an axle, so I was plenty paranoid. The rough section is 15 miles from the nearest ranch, so that would make a long walk out. Maybe pack an axle ready to go and of course food and water for a few days.

That’s pretty crazy. Glad you guys were able to get around him! That’s a good way to ruin a day if not. Can’t imagine the wrecker fee for that recovery.

 

That was exactly what my buddy was doing, a little reconnaissance up to the Malibu to discover if we could pass him on that location, we all hung back from the photo location in case he was impassable. The rest of that photo of course showed the beautiful valley between us. Yeah we should have followed up with the guy to find out what his recovery fee was. Haha.

 

The rav 4 new style is really nice. Almost reminds me of a nissan Xterra, but smaller.

 

It was last week, but Black Bear Pass (as well as all the other passes). And the scenic skyway in Colorado Springs on the way home to KC

 

Something different for me. These pics show the order of heading to this lake, fishing, and the return trip. To show a bit what some of the trails look like to the remote lakes I like to fish. This trip was Monday.

A lot of pics, but I thought some might be interested in what these types of trails are like to remote lakes in BC. I have 7 other lakes that are similar to this where I can fish alone. Three of those are much worse and I have to pretty motivated when I go to those ones. These trails can be pretty grim if it rains, but we have really had no rain in the last 6 weeks. Hot and dry.

I have been to this lake 5 times in the last 3 years and yet to see anyone. From what I understand mostly ATV guys go up this way but there were no tread marks on the trail. No trail markers either so you need good maps and GPS if you have that. So many side branches to get lost on.

For half of the drive there are no pullouts and most of the trail is truck width. The usual scratches to polish out.

A breakdown would not be good. Repairs would most likely have to be done onsite, or about a 15 hour hike out and then get a ride back in with parts or with a mechanic if it is severe. There are many worse spots than shown here. Not taking pics when driving those sections! I always travel alone, so I definitely take my time and great care.

The trail had over 30 spots where huge deadfalls, many over 100 foot had been cleared from the trail. I assume on behalf of the ATV crowd that visits this lake. Good thing. It would have taken me alone about 3 days to clear all of that with my chainsaw. I had to only clear one spot that was a too narrow for my truck.

One fish in the boat, and lost 2. Don't care if I catch a fish. The reward is just rowing these lakes in peace and solitude.

Oh, check out this guy who hitched a ride back from the bush. My wife found it dead in our yard today, and was like “what the hell is that?” Must have crawled under the hood and then came out gasping his last breath.

Crazy the number of wierd bugs I have brought back over the years. I drive with the windows fully down every time I am offroad. Always a surprise or two when I clean the inside of the truck the next day.

 

Kill it, help save a forest

 

One at a time will never work. I hear it has to be freaking cold winters, like -20 or colder for a long time before they die off.
