I miss a lot of things from the good ol days, but we are in the here and now, most of live longer, we have high speed internet and record high inflation, etc etc

OP, curious how deep was this puddle?

Probably deep enough to get his actuator…. Based on others with the same issue, doesn’t take much.

Surely, but I’m wondering if it’s well under water where there’s more actual water pressure pushing in. I’d have to go look at where it is. I’ve crossed some water but stay out of the deep stuff

I've had this issue and replaced the ADD (automatic disconnecting differential) twice now. Water gets in somehow and corrodes the motor which causes the 4wd light to just continuously blink until eventually you get a 2wd - 4wd error. Check to make sure your breather line isn't disconnected from the ADD. I'd also suggest taking it apart and cleaning it if the motor is still working but you may have to replace the whole unit.

One way to confirm this is the issue is to switch to 4wd and while it's blinking try to rotate the front driveline. If you can't rotate it your issue is with the ADD at the front diff. It is spins you have an issue with the transfer case. Hope this helps.
