Bad differential

Bought a 2022 Tacoma, SR5, Access cab. The truck was making a washboard like sound on deceleration below 30 mph. Seemed to be coming from the back. It occurred whether or not I was braking. Didn't feel anything, no steering shake, no brake pedal shake, only the noise.

Others have pointed to a TSB on the universal joint, mitigated by changing leaf springs.

With 700 miles on the truck, I took it to the dealer. After 5 hours they called to say they have to replace the differential- bad part. They said it will take a day at least to get the part, and may have it completed late tomorrow.

 

At least you got it taken care of in one appointment. After a couple appointments I got Toyota extended to cover a new front diff on my 18 for the same exact symptoms. There are several threads on this issue stemming from the needle bearing, hopefully the new part is improved so we don’t have this same problem again down the road. Now you can Enjoy your new truck!

Glad i bought my sr5 access cab just before covid hit. Seems a rash of major issues plaguing these newer tacoma's like never before. You gotta wonder if its really so.

 

During Covid, Honda was putting office workers on the assembly line. Not sure if Toyota was doing the same or not.

Jut Heard from dealer. They swapped rear differential (i thought it was front). Sound still there. They said they are reaching out to Toyota; want to keep the truck for day 3!

 

Did you get a free rental?

 

Initially dealer said they would fix the truck in a few hours, so I didnt see the need for a rental. When they said they needed another day and asked if I would leave it I mentioned I didn't have any transportation. They immediately set up a rental with Enterprise.

 

If your SR5 is 4x4, put it in 4 Hi and post if there is any change in the vibration or not.

 

When they were troubleshooting this, the dealer disconnected the rear driveshaft and said the problem was still there, albeit reduced. Their remarks also said it seemed to be coming from the rear (also my impression before I took it in)

 

washboard sound is a nogo

 

Just came back from having the 5K maint done on my 2022 SR5. I mentioned the washboard sound is still there albeit much reduced. Dealer said the TSB fr this has been extended to 2022 trucks- they have parts on order and will set up an appointment in about a week

 

Dealer did TSB on the truck last week- sound is gone!

 

What exactly did they do? What was the TSB?

The TSB is TSB0124-20 - you can google it. In brief, they measure the angle between the two sections of rear drive shaft. If the angle is out of spec they replace the leaf springs (I'm guessing that resolves the angle issue), and install a steering wheel damper. I don't know why the steering wheel damper.

 

Just install some 10 ply tires and you wont hear that noise over the tire noise.
