Truck has 1100 miles on it, went to open the sunroof for the 2nd time ever, it went to suck in and start sliding then went crooked and bound up. I reset it, tried again with the same results, except this time, I could hear what sounded like the motor just sitting there spinning over and over again, with the sunroof cock-eyed about 1 inch from completely closed ( see picture).

Obviously still under warranty, brought it into the dealership, within 30 seconds they accused me of taking my truck through a car wash which damaged my sunroof internally? This is exactly what the service manager said " Well Honey, what automatic car wash did you take it too? you might want to pursue them for damages".

In a wild chain of events, maybe a car wash could damage it, if it was left open? Causing rust and spraying the grease out of the tracks? I surely wouldn't assume that would happen in 3 months of owning a car and less then 1100 miles..

After several days, i finally received a update somehow the sunroof fell out of the tracks and ripped out approx $7,000 worth of wiring and harnesses, she said they will have to remove all my seats, panels and headliner to fix it. Her technician said he still isnt sure if warranty will cover it, and they will probably need my truck at least for a month until all parts come in.

Rental car through warranty is out of the picture due to the damage not being 100% warrantied yet..

Anyone ever have any issues as above? I asked if I could take it to another dealership she said yes, but they would have to charge me the diagnostic fees and fees to put the truck back together.

Sounds like a load of BS. I take mine through a carwash all the time with no issues. No other car that I owned with a moonroof had this issue either.

Did you take it to a carwash? That would be the first question. If you didn't, then call them out on it.

So if you have a sunroof you are forbidden by Toyota from using an automatic car wash? That sounds like a huge load of shit man!

Yeah, except there is no automatic car washes nearby, the one near my house is just the multiple bay, power washer wand type.

So you didn't take it to an automatic carwash. Obviously then it's a failure that should be covered under warranty. Don't give up until it is.

Try contacting Toyota Corporate. It's on Toyota to prove you did something wrong.

So, no car wash, and dont drive it in the rain. I HATE to say this, but this is typically how women are treated at some shops. Bunch of assholes. Find out who the regional rep is and contact them. Info is in your owners manual, call and tell them how you were treated.

@Cricket-0 let’s go do a little investigative work here. Drive by your dealer and see if they have an automatic car wash, if so take pics. Most dealers do and include that as part of their “service” and PDI (pre delivery inspection). So if they do, you nicely remind them the only automatic car wash it’s been through was theirs, and you did not even request/authorize it.

    I like how you think!

The days of lot boys hand washing cars are long gone.

it’s petty but your 10000% correct, that’s funny I didn’t think about that. The clear bra on the back fender fell off at 700 miles. I brought in my truck to this dealership to get it fixed and it came back clean.

Apex 5500 winch w/synthetic line (36lbs) and required accessories for an underpowered winch (snatch blocks and extra line.) Tekonsha P3 brake controller, remote start, any-time-backup camera w/ front facing camera, Leer 100R shell (w/e-track single slot tie-down mounts for removable Yakima EasyTop.) Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. Anytime rear with front facing camera. Billet front seat risers. Viair 88p. 265/75r16 Goodyear Ultra-terrain tires.
Get the cost of the diagnostics and whatever BS in writing then let them know that you'll give them a day or two to confirm it's warrantied.

If you don't get a 100% reassurance after those couple days then take it to another dealer. Let them work with corporate to cover their diagnostic fees.

$7k and treating someone like an idiot is far from going all petty. I’m a nice guy, but if someone is gonna treat me that way? We are gonna take the conversation outside,,, so to speak.

I ran my 4Runner through car washes for almost 9 years without problems.

I would get them to repeat that and record it. So when you take it to corporate they can see how the service department has no trust in the manufacturing process that their trucks can not be put through a car wash and ruins it within 1100 miles

Toyota is really going down hill, can't drive through a car wash, yet they drive every are car they ever get through a ..... car wash.

Doesn't drive like a regular truck, until you get it tuned.

Engines blowing up on #6 cylinder.

    Sorry on Toyota.

Pure crap! Keep pushing them and escalate as needed. Also, try another dealer if you have one nearby. Just like buying a new car, some dealers are just better and easier to work with than others.
