https://youtube.com/shorts/OMjbFjnvhEo?feature=share I feel like I’m kinda going crazy at this point but my truck started making a new sound today. The normal ticks are all there but there seems to be a new sound towards the rear of the engine that sounds to me to be more like a thumping/light knocking. It seems to be most prominent near the drivers side rear portion of the engine, and I can only just hear it inside the cab with the windows up. Anyone else’s truck do this? Ive got an appointment tomorrow for them to take a look at it, my battery is leaking profusely also so that’s another reason to take it in. And yeah, I know i need to clean it.

If you clean that engine it will sound better.

I don’t know these engines well enough to discern the sounds, but when your at the passenger side rear, sounds like exhaust manifold gasket leak to me. If you suspect that’s possible, look for soot and/or have someone rev it while you look around it in the dark for flashes.

Sounds just like mine..Like a 25 year old powerstroke. It’s weird coming out of a gas engine, but I get why.. interesting that not all of them sound the same though.

None to speak of, just enjoying it for the moment.
So I only have about 350 miles on my brandy new Tacoma V6. When idling it sounds distinctly like a diesel, I am thinking this is probably due to the Atkinson Cycle it operates at in low speed/idle? I think it sounds good, but it is funny that it sounds like that.

I know these engines have both port and direct injection as well as a cleaning cycle and they all can engage at different or the same times from what I've read. Might be the noise you're hearing. No I don't own a 2GR-FKS but I'm a Toyota nerd.

The cleaning cycle on hot idle makes the racket.

Yeah so I've owned or own both Direct injection and Port Fuel Injection ICE engines and they have no semblance to the sound of a Diesel like this motor. The cleaning cycle (which I hadn't heard of) may have something to do with it though.

Mine always sounded exactly the same (like a ‘97 powerstroke) maybe it was stuck in the “cleaning cycle”?? Haha

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining about it in fact it's pretty cool no issues so long as that's how it's supposed to sound. I've been around a lot of engines started young since I worked with my dad who was an auto mechanic by trade and have not heard an ICE engine sound so much like a diesel about much softer and quieter
