Can you even get 235s in anything less than an E rating?

I will double post this here too just because.

75 MPH 2750 RPM but... It will unlock the converter for any reason and then its just a tick under 3K.

And, it doesnt seem to suffer from a speed limiter, I shut her down at 90 just to check up to/beyond 83 MPH.

Hey just checking on an update on how you have been liking the 5.29s going to go that route soon. You would also benefit significantly from a tune. Totally changes how the truck drives in a good way. Having slightly bigger tires small lift and a topper all hurt. The tune helps a ton around town it drives great but highway is still eh. Just not turning enough rpm in 6th or 5th so it prompts a 4th gear lockdown and then it’s screaming

If I could have 5.50/60 I would. A buddy just got a 23 Taco so we have been chatting gearing. I could live without my sixth gear and Ive been playing around with driving around in fifth on the auto selector. If when a 5 speed goes in this truck, (I hate auto) I think it will be just about the perfect ratio, slightly lower than my current fifth gear, but I will be going to 235/85-16 next tires, which are slightly taller.

Id rather have first as a useless granny gear and start in second than a barely useable sixth OD gear.

    5.29 gets a huge up-thumb!

Im hesitant on a tune but yeah, Im sure Id enjoy a conservative one. Im going to have to read up on whats new there, last I checked it was still under development.

On the header note, LCE has just expended the headers to fit the 2022.... so it was the same all along. In the coming months I will probably spring for one.

Really more gear than 5.29's? Being in NC and 70 MPH speed limits would be a stretch for me. i am going from 265/75/16s to 235s as well for my next set, 2 lbs lighter and a 1.1'' less wide should help the 2.7. The height those is almost identical 31.6 to 31.7 that wont be anything noticeable but the less width will be i think. I knew the header was the same nothing changed from 21-22 it was a worth while upgrade. The tune is final, its a drastic night and day difference drives like a completely different truck. If i had to pick the tune or the header it would no question be the tune. The tune just cant fix the fact on the highway 6th and 5th just does not turn enough rpm's. 5.29's will turn slightly more rpm in 6th than it currently does in 5th now with 4.30's. Hope that remedies the excessive 1000 rpm kickdown to 4th, with the extra 4-500rpms in 5th or 6th over stock gearing at highway speeds.

I have those Destination X/T's but in 215 85 r16. They are great tires. Within 1 lb of the stock tires the truck came with, and mounted on alloy snowflakes, they made my truck come alive again compared to the 245 /75 r16 BFG KO's on steel wheels I bought it with. I think I dropped 16lbs per wheel/tire! Awesome in the snow, not as strong as the BFG's, but I'm not hardcore offroading.

I have a 23 SR with 1500 miles on it. I'm seriously thinking about 5.71 for this reason.

I'm also weighing locker options. Yukon and Eaton both make a mechanical locker. I'm going to tighten up the suspension with a set of Bilsteins and keep the stock tire size (maybe go up to a 265/75-16 to fine tune the gearing). It's basically a small acreage utility truck. I think the 5.71's could come in handy in the pasture and whatnot. That also raises the question of a locker or posi. Not sure how effective the "auto" LSD is - or if a locker is just going to confuse the computer...

Having lived with it, what would you do differently (if anything)?

Most of the time I just lock it in 5th because why limp along at 1600RPM at 50 MPH where 2000 is at least not luggin it as badly. Sixth isnt useless but its one jump in ratio from being really useful Id guess. If I leave it in D it will downshift 1-2 gears on any little rise, Im in central Fla so Id guess my old stomping grounds in NJ/NY mountains would really exaggerate this. Im glad I skipped 4.88 if nothing else. No complaints on the locker I used, but Im not wheeling it, just wet boat ramps n roads.

Next tire change I might go from BFG KO2 265s to their Trail Terrains in the same size which are far lighter. Near 12-14# per tire I think. And I will get her tuned in the coming months in hopes it gives a sliver more torque to pull the small grades without punching it to 4/5K RPM.

Ideally, Id swap in a 5 speed and 4.88s like my last reg cab 2014 had.

Tire change and tune will make a world of difference those KO2s are what 53-54lbs, my wheel and tire setup is almost the same weight as your tires. I have 265/75/16 cooper at3 4s AT's with fsw wheels and im 58.4 per corner. Tune is a huge difference as well, i have my 5.29 3rd members on order cant wait to get somewhat normal highway gearing.

Yeah, a manual would be ideal.

I'm at the edge of the Ozark plateau, and a bunch of rolling hills that get bigger the further south you go. Were I to venture out - East is Illinois bean fields and west is Kansas headwinds and a long climb to Colorado Springs. The motor hums right along at 2700 and starts to enter its torque curve. 70-75 is right there with 5.71's and stock tires.

I want a truck that runs like my old 93 or 1st gen. I leave it in 4th for 2 lane blacktop and let into 5th on the highway. 6th is useless and it'll downshift from 5th if there a decent incline.

I don't want to just move that problem from 5/4 to 6/5... hence thinking about 5.71's

I'm concerned about driveshaft speed, and the odd reports of fuel cut-off / speed limiting. I suspect they're related.

oh - based on YouTube, I think the Auto LSD function will handle most anything I need it for. I'm going to skip the locker.

I just put my 5.29's in over the weekend the rear atleast need to throw in the front next weekend. I have been driving the same as you locking it in 5th since it will upshift to 6th before 50 mph and lug. You're right 4.88's would have been useless, happy with the selection i think 5.71's could be even better. I am right at 2500-2550 at 75mph guessing 5.71's would be 2750ish at the same speed. It drives better all around but the biggest difference is highway speeds 60-75 which is the main reason for wanting to re gear. I tune my own truck and tried the stock tune with the gears vs tuned with the gears, get a tune and be done with it, wont have any problems with the converter locking in 6th. The way the pedal feels to how it shifts completely changes in a good way. Mine feels great and im 4WD with a midrise topper and slight lift which doesn't help aerodynamics.

I have the 4wd version of you truck and tire set up. Are you glad you went 5:29, is the truck capable of holding 6th on the highway without gear hunting? What was the effect on fuel mileage?

The biggest felt difference is on the highway, it holds 6th even up a small grade it will still downshift to 5th on bigger grades but no more of the 4th-5th-6th-5th-4th-5th-4th dance. I only have about 300 miles on it so far mpg has been the same or slightly up. I am taking a trip to see some family for thanksgiving week it will be a 12-1300 mile round trip. I will have a better feeling on mpg its turning more rpms but my foot is barley in the throttle compared to stock. Its hard to explain how much of a difference it made but its drastic considering its a little under $2000 if you purchase the 3rd members and do the work yourself. I only have the rear in i will be swapping the front this weekend. I was honestly questioning keeping the truck but it fixed all my issues i had. Its still not a fast truck by anymeans but it what a difference. I can see 4.88's being ok for the 3.5 if you dont go bigger than 33'' tire but on the 4 banger i wouldn't think of anything besides 5.29's. The truck never felt this good even on bone stock tires with no weight, it went from feeling borderline undriveable to dare i say peppy

I’m glad someone understand my pain with the shifting. If it makes the truck usable I’ll be happy. Everyone else said it’s only a 4cyl what do you expect etc etc.

I’d love to hear back after your trip about mileage. Have you towed anything yet?
