Just realized you said alternator and not battery. I don't know if putting a larger alternator will require a tune or not.

No clutch. Alternator has Internal voltage regulator that limits the voltage. No ECU tune required Just have to select a higher rated one that fits your Tacoma. I’ve not upgraded mine.

Then why do the tuners have the option to charge at a higher level for AGM batteries?

I’m aware of that. The other complicating factor is the new CA law where you won’t pass smog if factory tune is altered. Unclear whether these tunes will be detectable by the smog shops. One more headache to worry about.

For now I am just going to throw it on a tender once a week to keep it happy.

@malatx and I were discussing alternators not AGM batteries. No tune needed just to upgrade the alternator. If you install an AGM battery, AGM batteries need a slightly higher voltage IF you want an optimum charge. Not an absolute requirement but should last longer with a slightly higher voltage. That can be done with a tune or also techstream i believe, or can add a diode, there are threads discussing the options.

I personally would not choose to increase the voltage with an AGM battery for several reasons, have to be careful not to set voltage too high, slightly higher added stress to all the electrical components, etc. Others choose to do it and I understand why. I’ve read mixed reviews on TW regarding the subject. I choose to stick with Standard lead acid batteries for now.

I'm going to throw this out to @PapaRee and @TWTaco because I believe there was a thread out there about that from when the new CARB regs came out. If I recall correctly someone took their truck with a KDMax tune through the smog check and it passed. Maybe Kreg and Dave can comment further.

Let's be honest, the so-called tacomaworld aren't actual tuners. They don't have shops with dynos. They're not car guys with any experience, they're trial and error, piggybacking off what other people already came up with, tweaking those free open tunes and selling them at stupidly high prices.

All the regs you guys have out there are a dual edged sword. It's a pain in the ass, but you don't end up with the incredible amounts of crap on the road that shouldn't be like we have here in FL.

True statement. I’m a square peg in a round hole out here in Ca when it comes to politics/regulations but there is absolutely no denying that the smog levels are MUCH lower than they were 40-50 years ago in LA

Toyota reimbursed me 100% of my receipt, including the added core charge. I still got to turn the battery in to where I purchased my new one from, so technically (excluding my time), I made money off of doing an emergency warranty repair.
