That is certainly one way to go about it. On my side, I didn't mind doing the stuff at home and was looking forward to the end of the ToyotaCare work. For the stuff that they did though, I found no overtorqued fasteners, my filter cartridge came off with reasonable effort, and nothing was damaged. Helping a friend do a suspension on his sister's 4Runner that was serviced by another dealer, I found the very opposite.

I'd love to be able to do my own. I live in a condo and they don't allow people to work on their vehicles in the parking lot. I'm trying to work out a deal with a local farmer to rent part of his equipment shed on occasion for small projects.

Oh. That blows. We had a condo for a while. Even working out in the open or around the weather was less than fun. Hopefully that deal works out for you.

I grew up with a decent sized one car garage and my wife never had any. It was a great day to get a two car garage and put it to good use.

At 90K miles, with mostly city/highway driving, Toyota u-joints are going to last and least another 90K and probably more. I would be more concerned about brake inspections, maybe plugs and coolant replacement.

Brakes and rotors just replaced 1.5 years ago , Plugs done at 95,000 km and coolant and pretty much every fluid in the truck is scheduled for replacement in 1st week of October. I told the dealership..if it has fluid in it i want it replaced. Transmission , transfer case, both diffs, brakes, power steering, coolant , all of it new.

Probably any grease will be fine. This is what I used.

I felt going with what the manual calls for might make my U joints last longer.
