I trying pulling my 2010 tacomas needle bearing to hotheads to ecgs’s and I pulled it wrong. It felt good and aligned but apparently not. The whole “needle cage” came out with the needles but not the metal sleeve and i now can’t get a good hold on the bearing puller. How do I take this bearing sleeve out now?

Wow, terrible result. What did you use to pull it? ECGS tool?
If that won’t pull it, I’d consider prying it out. Assuming this outer ring is thin metal, a chisel might allow you to cut through/bend/pry it out. I’d be concerned about marring the inner surface and/or pushing the outer ring in further.
    Good luck!

With a small chisel, work underneath the shell until you can get a nice sharp chisel into it and cut it. It will take some time and patience but this is how I have found is easiest to remove these shaells after the needle bearing have disintegrated.

The chisel would work well. I might try and get it like I have other bearings races and cut almost all the way through it with a small body air saw then finish it with a small chisel. This has worked well for me in the past but if you have never done it be careful not to cut all the way through.

I've done over 20 needle bearing replacements and have yet to have a problem like this. The removal and install tools from ECGS work great for this job. Aside from shaving down the removal tool a couple mm.

It astounds me that ECGS doesn't refine the design to not require it to be modified.

Agree. Some have luck and not need to shave it. Mine that has been shaved on one corner, fits easily on 2nd/3rd gen Tacomas.

Before altering the tool, I broke the inner lip of a needle bearing. First one I ever did (my personal Tacoma).

I had the exact same experience... broke mine, before learning to alter the tool, and subsequently did many more replacements.

I made my own removal tool and found it had to be chamfered on the back side to fir between the housing and backside of the bearing.

This is the only Toyota needle bearing I have done. My experience is S-cam needle bearings in commercial vehicles. By the time you see rust streaks out of the seals the needles are powder and there is no inner or outer keeper lip anymore, just the outer shell.
