A little something every chance we get.
:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals & Gal! Friday it is! All my prep for the big rain, and "future radar" unfortunately pegged us exactly. Only a trace in the outflow boundry, and that was all. Even the boundry fizzled here with just one gust of 20 mph. We're supposed to get some today, and "everybody gets some" next week. I was hoping not to have to water Saturday night, so we'll see. I have one of two green islands on the street. Making up my mind still about what to do today....

    Afternoon all:
Glad to hear that those infected with covid are making it through it without showing severe symptoms.
:annoyed: A mower blade loosened up on my old mower while mowing off to the side of the main yard. It messed up a splined flanged washer and the splined shaft it goes on. Got a new washer, and this morning I removed the deck and cleaned up the splines on the shaft and got it back together, good as new!
:annoyed::annoyed:THEN, I've been running out of water after only a few gallons, and now no water at all. Was coming up from the pond with some containers of water and saw my neighbor out in the yard after just getting back from Alaska visiting his brother. I told him my problem and asked him if he wanted to do a "pay for" job and not a neighbor free job, and if he didn't want to do it, or couldn't do it, to recommend someone. He said give me 10 min. and I'll be over and see if I can figure out what's going on. Everything checked out and he narrowed it down to the well pump took a chit, so we continued on and pulled the pump! Probably on Mon. we will be installing the new pump and hopefully it will outlast me! I bought the house in 86, so that pump is at least 36 yrs. old., guess I can't complain about that, plus when we pulled it everything was heavily coated with clay including the pump, what a mess!

OH, I forgot, we like pictures! :)
The band between the green part and the white part looks like the intake slots where the water enters the pump, lots of that clay in there also which may have kept it from pumping, I think it was time to replace it!

That looks nasty. Bet you got a workout pulling that up. How deep is your well? I think I have replace 2 since I have lived here past 25 years granted one was replaced under warranty. Foulds pump had a ten year warranty

I have a product review for you. Not sure if it is appropriate for this venue, but with all the talk about pools and such, I thought I'd tell of my experiences with in ground pool cleaners. I started out with the Hayward cleaner, and spent so much time dismantling it to remove clogs, that when it wore out, I went with the Zodiac Baracuda MX8. This machine doesn't clog up anywhere near as easy as the Hayward, and is fast and easy to remove clogs when it does. I've had this now for about 10 years, and I'm working on the third rebuild kit, as working parts do wear out like any other.

As for efficiency, it has rubber scrubbers that help prevent algea by doing what the name implies. The random pattern of travel covers all areas of the pool including the sides up to the water line, but doesn't climb stairs. It never gets stuck in a tight spot, because the double transmissions randomly reverse. After yard work that deposited silt on the bottom, I turned on the pump and enjoyed watching the MX8 clean every inch before I finished my third beer. Palm tree seeds go through the turbine easily, while they would always clog the Hayward.

There may be better or cheaper pool cleaners, but I'm not shopping for another one any time soon.

The well is 84' deep, the pump was set at 66', and there is water at 21'.
Yes, got a workout, it had rigid pvc and we pulled so much and then cut it off, held onto it with pipe wrenches so it wouldn't slip back down the well casing and kept repeating that until the pump was out. My neighbor suggested using the more flexible black poly pipe for the well pipe, seems like that's what they are using today and makes it easier to pull the pump if needed.

    Good morning fellow Porchatonians!!

Slept until 5:30 this morning but felt good enough to stay awake and have coffee - first time since last Saturday when the COVID monster grabbed me. I completed the Paxlovid course of treatment yesterday - still a little congestion but not as tired as I've felt all week. I might actually get something dne today - or at least hit the pool. Will test later today to see if I'm still positive or not.

I decided to start the Willett Rye COVID Antiviral treatment plan last evening. Might be why I slept so well. :D

Haven't thought about getting a pool cleaner - that one looks interesting Alan, except we do have stairs along the shallow end as well as a large bench at the deep end. Probably need to stick with the normal manual labor approach.

Wife and I pulled our pump shortly after installed in '91. It had been set too deep initially and was pulling sediment off the bottom. Raised it 20', perfect since. Poly pipe is definitely the way to go, along with a pull line, and torque arrester for insurance.
The key to a long pump life, is to have the largest pressure tank you can get into whatever space you have available. You can also have multiple smaller tanks. More storage volume makes for fewer start cycles. Also easier on control box components. I installed a pilot light on the well circuit, to keep track of how much it runs, which is 2-3 times a day.
I keep a new pump control box on hand, since I had to drive 100+ miles one Sunday morning to find a replacement. They're repairable, but when we're out of water, I can replace the entire control box with a new one in 15 minutes. If that's not it, then it's the pump. FRANKLIN ELECTRIC 1/2 HP Submersible Water Pump Control Box - - Amazon.com I've only had to replace one control box in 33 years, because of a bad start capacitor. Gives me good vibes, knowing a new one is on hand. I can always use it on a new pump install if/when.

    Morning.
Went to Tamworth NH yesterday for a test and tune before we head to Watkins Glen.
Confirmed a few repairs we did and found a couple more that need attention.
We have a month so back at it.
Hope you all have a great weekend

    Morning all:

I do have the larger pressure tank, I'm also being told not to expect to get 30+ years out of a new pump. Looking at the clay accumulation on the old pump, I don't know how it could have possibly lasted as long as it did. From just doing some research, I don't see the Jacuzzi well pumps listed anymore, what brand pump did you install?

Good luck at Watkins Glen Mike!

I fly fish streams and rivers in shorts and wading shoes 99% of the time. I have some nice Orvis breathable chest waders but have only wore them 5 or 6 times. I target all trout species Steelhead, Rainbows, Browns, Cuts etc. Years ago I use to do those long weekend trips up into Northern California and fish the upper Sac, the McCloud , Hat creek and others. Zombie at work Monday and for a few days after that. A lot different now that I’m retired. Use to tie my flys but drifted away from that when I was working long hours. It’s a great feeling when you catch fish on your own hand tied flys.
Think I will head up the the Truckee and Little Truckee rivers next week and wet a line. Haven’t been for months. Tight lines all.
