2012 2.7 4x4. What is the oil capacity I’ve seen so many answers. The manual says 6 quarts with filter change but I have read and head that 5 or 5.5 quarts is enough and 6 is over filled is that true. Thanks.

My 2008 2.7 4x4 called for 6.1 quarts, but I believe 4x2s were less. I just poured in 6 quarts and called it a day, because it was very close to the full line. I believe Toyota changed this specification to 5.5 quarts in 2018, but I’m not sure about that.

    My 2018 2.7 calls for 6.2.

You can download the owners manual from Toyota.com, it has all the info you need.

For my 2015 Base V6 4X4, it's 5.5qt, with a filter change per the manual:
    Screenshot_20220820-172744.jpg

For your 2.7L, looks like 6.1qt is the right answer. But just like the manual says, check the level after an oil change via the dipstick to verify.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I didn’t mean they updated it for the 2018 model year, they updated for the older engines like my 2008 that I used to own. It doesn’t make since, unless my dipstick was off, because 6 quarts was perfect. I read about that update on the Amsoil lubrication guide, so who knows.

I usually stop 1 quart shy of the fill spec in the manual.
Then pour slowly until I reach full on the dipstick.
Start the truck let it run for a few seconds, let oil get into filter and then top it off to full.
Actually I do this for everything, Not just cars/trucks.

And No, I almost never prefill the filter. And how would you on the 4.0 anyways?

On the V6’s, you can get some oil in the filter before inverting it and not spill any oil - just don't top it off before inverting. I used to pre-fill, then got talked out of it from trusty mechanics. I don't check the dip stick when I change the oil. Just drain and throw in six quarts.

I have the same 2012 2.7 liter 4X4 Tacoma. I read all kinds of things about oil capacity for this engine. My manual says 6.1 qts, but that is over the line on my dipstick. Then I heard Toyota possibly used the wrong dipstick. So I dump 6 qts in and I re-marked the dipstick myself. Have had zero issues doing this

Don’t even get me started.
Let’s just say, it’s missing one on the 4.0 Auto trucks. (But it’s not the engine oil dipstick)

Who needs a dipstick when you can jam wires in the the DLC, then do a circus act with the shifter, and after all that, wait for lights to show up on the dash.

Then crawl under the truck and remove a plug and let fluid pour out.

Who ever thought that was a good way to check the fluid should be kicked in the nuts.

My 2012 2.7 says 6.1, the dipstick shows overfull if I put 6 quarts in so I've been putting in 5.5 qts and it's right at the full mark.

Yea, unfortunately the transmission dipstick is becoming a thing of the past across all vehicles. It sucks, us mechanics hate it too but what do we know we aren't a college educated engineer:crazy:

Shit, I am a "college-educated engineer", and I still think it's dumb as all hell. I understand why they did it, but it still sucks for anyone who knows how to turn a wrench.

No disrespect but I can't see a good reason for not having a dipstick other than cost savings. I've seen alot of poor design choices on late model vehicles beyond the absence of a trans dipstick, it seems no thought is put in to how they will be used anymore just how cheaply they can be made.

Cheaper and not cost-effective to repair. That is direction they are headed.

And if you can repair it, you need $1,000s of dollars in tools.
It won’t be long before the average guy, trying to save a bit on money by DIYing it his garage, is a thing of the past. (Like me)

Best way is to do the first oil change and see how much you put in. Then repeat every oil change with that ammount.

lucky for me….all my cars are exactly 5 quarts.
    4.0 Tacoma.
    2015 accord 2.4L
    2013 g37

makes it easy to change the oil. And more simple to just buy the 5 quart big bottle from Wally World.
