I remember Air Cooled VW's introducing the Auto-Stick, no clutch but you still had to shift gears.

How about a automatic transmission with a reverse manual valve body ..... PR N 123 . It's basically a full manually controlled automatic transmission , Ea gear change you feel it hit hard once you move the shifter into that gear

Just don't hit 1rst gear at speed or you'll money shift and lock up the tires

I went with MT on my '22 OR, did I have to wait a little bit? Yes but I'm loving driving my Taco with the MT, keeps a smile on my face.

I rented a car here in Iceland on Thursday; the price I paid for a full day, including all of the insurances and nearly 400 Kilometers worth of gas, was about $450, that same car with an automatic transmission would have cost over $1,200 just for the car before any of the extras. That said, this isn't a true apples to apples comparison. Why? The rental agency I rented my car from only rents manuals (typically to EU residents); all of the companies which cater to Americans have automatic transmissions and charge through the nose for them.

That reminds me of this one time I was in heavy bumper to bumper traffic. I was driving my 05 Corolla XRS with 6MT and had my utility trailer in tow. Sitting there with my brakes on and suddenly notice I am moving. Push harder on the brakes... still moving???? I take a glace behind me and this asshat in a Diesel F350 is lazily hovering over his brakes and pushing me like I am not even there... pulled forward, got out and told him off. There was no damage thankfully.

I've had my MT for just about 13 years now and still look forward to driving it each day. It all comes down to personal preference.

I just don't like modern autos. Excessive gear-hunting for a few extra MPGs, and they have far too much of a disconnected feel. I drove a friend's new Taco and didn't like it at all. I also rented a Camry a while back and the gear-hunting on the highway was maddening. My wife's Civic has a CVT and it just feels...bizarre. With older autos you could still kind of get them to do what you wanted, i.e. mashing on the gas to get them to downshift. Then again, I had several older autos that had problems and were not cheap to fix. I'd hate to pay for repairs on one of the new ones.

Thats funny. I learned to drive a manual with 3 on the tree that was in a buddies old man's studebaker. They were from latvia. His father had a disability from receiving gunshot wounds during ww2, so when we were old enough, he let us learn to drive the car. Wasn't long after i bought a 66 jeep commando with a manual, then a 73 datsun manual pickup, and later a 78 toyota wolverine manual pickup. It was pretty much automatic's after that, except for an 88 manual v6 toyota sr5 pickup. I will say my v6 93 toyota automatic pickup was gutless compared to the 88 one i had with the same engine. Those automatics sucked quite a big of power.

Manual for me. It’s all I’d ever owned from 1990 until 2012, and I’m starting to miss it after driving a friends manual recently.

For many of the same reasons, I’m trading in my Tundra for a new Taco. I really like my Tundra. It’s been a fine truck. However, I just love the Tacoma’s. My ‘06 SR5 was great. The ‘18 TRD-OR was great, except the trans shifting drove me nuts. I’m hopeful the ‘22 will be even better, because I’ll control the shifting. It’s still on schedule for a build date of next week. I was lucky enough to find a local dealer with a ‘22 MT allocation, TRD-OR, with most of the bells and whistles I wanted. I know I’ll miss the push-button start, but that’s about the only thing.

A question came up a several post back regarding manual/auto use off road.

    My take on this:

I will agree that both have some advantages over the other depending on the terrain.

On top of that, I would venture to guess that only about 5% of the TW population here even go on trails or terrain that is out of reach for a stock Prius. With that, which trans is better is pretty mute.

Same for most tacoma owners here. I'll bet over 90% never see a dirt road, yet many have lifts, and large aggressive mud tires. We do get snow storms, but you don't need any of that stuff as i've found out with my stock sr5 will go anywhere if the roads are not plowed. It still amazes me how capable these trucks compared to my 4wd tundra.

Hence the fact I have a TRD Sport (6MT) scheduled to be built next week; I figure the extent of my "off-roading" will be traversing the lawn with a load of mulch. :)

Of course I'd need to tease him mercilessly about driving a truck with an autotragic transmission. :p

Well if you go by what many tw members have posted about their auto transmissions, it'd be just the opposite as his nissan has been working just fine.

Actually, the last year to get a manual in a 3/4 ton or 1 ton was 2016/2017. It was the ram 2500 and 3500 series.

I learned manual when I was 13.. come 16, last year, I couldn't bring myself to get an automatic so I took a good long while of browsing and found a manual. Worth the effort!
I don't do anything "hard" off-road but I've taken it out and had some fun "crawling" up stuff (profile picture), and also drive on the beach quite a bit. Very easy to manage.
Haven't launched a boat yet but it seems simple enough in 4 low and knowing how to use the clutch.
Best of luck, the manual is definitely a good choice!
