The "maintenance required" came on the other day, 2012 base model Taco, at 47,000 miles.
    No other error lights.

The manual for that indicator lists a bunch of causes.

Note that it occurred after a few days of sitting in hot sun.

Any idea where to start - or ignore for now?
I would like to avoid having the go see 'the man".

    engine oil change?

That would make sense as I admit to doing them on late time intervals (not miles driven).
Last was done at the dealer, three months ago, on a very generous coupon, and I thought I read a "reset" somewhere on the work order.

Could it be other oil changes?

The maintenance light is nothing more than a bean counter of miles. It's been 5K miles since it was last reset.

No. Reset the reminder and then reset it again on your next oil change.

Just reset it. It's a reminder to change your oil.

Here's one vote to NEVER reset the maintenance light. It can get you out of a lot of things. Examples:

    1) Old lady asks you to take the trash to the garbage dump. "Sorry my maintenance light is on."
    2) Pick up a blind date at her home and she looks like a crack whore? "Oh gotta run you back home, my maintenance light just popped on."
    3) Buddy needs to borrow your truck to pick up a washer? "Love to, Dude, but my maintenance light is on."
    4) Cop pulls you over and says you smell like alcohol. "My maintenance light popped on a few miles back and I tried cleaning my spark plug up with my snatch bottle."
Cop asks, "What's a snatch bottle?"....Answer: "Bottle of jack I keep in the truck to get the ladies in the mood."

    So on and so forth.

Someone didn’t reset the last oil change then.

It’s just an interval reminder. Starts showing at start up at 4500 miles and stays on at 5k miles

I reset that 5kmi reminder the moment it comes on, and pay no attention to its intervals. I follow oil change intervals separately.

I let mine live on. I change mine every 5k on the odometer. Did one early change years ago to land on 85k so now it's easy. Every 5 and 0 I do a change
