This can be from 2 issues. One is heat soak, essentially the coolant/refrigerant is carrying it's maximum amount of heat and can not expel it properly. This can happen when idling in high ambient temperatures.

The other issue could be low coolant/refrigerant charge. Essentially this is again a heat soak issue but caused by the reduced heat carrying capacity of the insufficient charge.

The first can be solved with air movement through the condenser. This is where the heat is expelled. So driving or an auxiliary fan will help.

The second will require A/C system servicing. These systems use Y1234yf refrigerant, So a dealer or A/C specialist is best.

AC system slow leak is definitely possible, but with regular driving it would show up as well, wouldn’t it? You are right though, a service checkup is warranted. OP can save a step letting Toyota look at it first.

Toyota service today said they could not duplicate my concern. They looked over the system, no visible leaks, and said it was blowing between 35*-40* at the vents. Mind you it was 76* outside. I think our 100* days are over with here to duplicate. It was only noticed on 100* days. I never had the system just turn off like the SB states. Just stopped producing cool air.

Will you run over the warranty mileage/time if they put it off until the next hot day? If you don’t want to put in a fan yourself and you want them to do it, I would escalate the case to corporate as well. They should have known they would not have been able to duplicate the problem in less than 80° weather.

Thats the neat thing with this TSB, it says if they cant reproduce it the problem, just do the fix. I took mine in, they tried to reproduce it and couldnt, they said sorry cant do anything. I told them to pull the the TSB and read it. They did and ordered the parts.

The preface of the TSB is "If the customer makes this specific complaint, then this is the repair"

    Some dealers are useless.

TSB's are to make customers happy, and keep techs working.

The only complaints that I have is water dripping on the passenger side in humid days. Read up on it in a post here that it is not a big deal and different opinions on it. I ususualy get about a teaspoon of spattered water nothing to cry about but will have it checked out by my mechanic who is not a Toyota man but a reliable shop that I have been using for years as my dealer is 3 hours away.

My AC has been less than impressive since I have owned it new. I live in Fla where it is on 8 months out of the year. During day time driving the fan is on high more than any car I own or have owned. The dealer says it is normal.

This exactly. As a 30 year career technician, step number one is to ensure the proper amount of refrigerant in the system by evacuating and recharging to the proper amount. Without doing this first, everything else is speculation.

I am becoming a little tired of the 20’ tacoma. I have not put 3k on it yet picked it up in January with 27k. A/C issue, the rear end whine is annoying, along with the engine noise sounding like a diesel. I guess I didn’t do enough homework on it before the purchase. Glad the resale is good on them.

I suppose my expectations are too high.

I’m not sure the direction to go now.

2 things are a necessity around these parts in the summer.

    1. Roll down all the windows for the 1st couple of minutes with the air intake set to fresh and AC on. No point in trying to cool that hot pocket of air

    2. Once you roll up the windows switch to recirculation mode

Go back with a copy of the TSB, and show them this part:

One thing about this TSB. Make sure you read it and understand how ghetto this factory 'fix' is. It really hacks up the wiring to add that second fan and opens the door for lots of problems. Tacos sold in Mexico come with this fan from the factory so it's mere cheapness that we don't get it.

Genuine question - my AC has actually been great. I was worried about it when I moved to Florida but it's been performing very well.

I noticed that this TSB only applies to A/T models...anyone know what the difference might be?

If you wheel a lot or have had the truck in mud recently, go hose out the condenser. Ive its not flowing air, its not cooling your cab.

Try using your Auto on the heat/cool this may control your fan better. I have had that happen before with using just regular settings and fan was hardly turning and this was in the winter. So I changed the setting to Auto and wow the fans went full throttle and also notice all lights were on e.g. ac. recycling and fans and then I would just adjust the temp on the unit and the rest would adjust itself accordingly to the settings. just saying try it.

One difference is the relay gets mounted where the hydraulic line for the clutch master cylinder is, which right by the brake booster. Someone on another thread mentioned the dealer refused to do the install on his MT taco because he couldn't mount the relay exactly where the TSB said to.
