They were losing power. They shook the filters on the truck that was throwing codes a couple time prior to it giving a code. The code actually appeared when we left the dusty road and started cruising on the highway. The truck went into some sore rod limp mode. I believe the code was associated with the MAF from memory.

Explain how driving through a dust cloud with a snorkel is different than driving through a dust cloud with stock intake. There's no doubt it's hella dusty at both locations. Snorkels are absolutely better for the other 99% when you aren't in a convoy.

Can anybody who has done the mod chime in on cowl intake vs stock or a snorkel?

The dust kicks up and goes directly into the snorkel. Behind the fender liner there is adequate space for the dust to fall out of the air? If you travel in a convoy with both snorkelled and stock trucks it becomes totally obvious. 10X dust ingestion with a snorkel.

But why is the air behind the liner cleaner? Your truck is totally engulfed in dust so it doesn’t matter where you bring air from. That’s like claiming you get different humidity in the air from one source verses another, your truck is surrounded by it so everything you bring in is equally humid.

The only thing I can think of is maybe some sort of pressure or velocity differential of the air in the inner fender causing some of the dust to drop out?? But idk, that seems like a bit of a stretch to me.

A normal snorkel end is like a funnel, with the forward velocity of the truck forcing the dust down it. The standard inlet is in a dead zone in the fender, no velocity forcing the dust down it, so the dust is more likely to fall out of suspension instead of getting sucked up.

Extensive personal experience shows this is just not the case. Toyota was smart to put intake where it. Try it yourself. 10x less dust. I assume the dust coming off the truck in front of you is swept up and into the snorkel, where as in the wheel well, behind the skirt, the air is more settled and devoid of dust.

Anyways…….that’s why they sell all those stupid socks and ugly centrifugal dust-separators for the top of snorkels. It’s a known problem.

If you have a snorkel, without the centrifugal system, you are putting more dust into your intake. One of many reasons snorkels are a dumb fashion statement on a gasoline vehicle, whose safe fording depth is 12” at best.

Look at the electronic modules mounted to the frame rails. I would say if you are above 1/2 up your wheel in a Taco, you are asking for trouble.

Not to mention the massive EMI the fuel pump 'module' throws off. Silly turd gens.

So I think the bottom line is you 3rd gen guys get a great air filter, and us 2nd gen guys get a great truck. Deal? Deal! :D

But our motor is rated for minivan duty, making it a cut above. It’s basically the equivalent of a NATO battle-hardened motor.

They are in minivans but also used by Lotus. I think it's the FE, not the FKS, but I'm not 100% sure.

Isn’t there more 3Gs on the road than 2Gs now? Also the 2G is a bonafied “grandpa truck”, so at most it’s gonna see light duties, like hauling lawn clippings, and trips to the hardware store for furniture polish.

No one can deny, hundreds of thousand of clueless newbs schralping their 3G’s through the California desert, bloated with 2000lbs of overland crap, and 70lb tires is testament to the durability of the 2GR-FKS.

I never thought of it that way but your comment comes at a funny time. It hit me today that basically Tacoma youtube channel is a race to bolt the most crap on in the shortest time. 'Once the bed stiffeners are on you gotta tune it so your chrome delete gets better GMRS range. The seat jack reduces the ditch light glare on your Pro grille'. Shills on shills.
